♟️ About CS Șah Club Galați

CS Șah Club Galați is a chess organization based in Galați, eastern Romania. Affiliated with the Romanian Chess Federation since 2009, the club combines competitive chess with a strong emphasis on children’s development, school chess, community tournaments, and FIDE-rated competition. Its activities extend across Galați County and neighboring Brăila, while several recent projects have also taken the club to other Romanian cities and resorts. The club provides chess instruction for beginners, intermediate players, and advanced competitors. In addition, it organizes classical and rapid tournaments for registered players alongside introductory competitions for children who have not yet entered the federation system. CS Șah Club Galați cooperates regularly with Șah în Școală, schools, CSM Galați, local institutions, parishes, and other chess clubs. Therefore, its program connects formal tournament chess with broad grassroots participation. Lucian Jugaru is the current President of CS Șah Club Galați and its principal public contact. He is directly involved in coaching, tournament organization, registrations, and the club’s school-chess projects. During 2026, the club has maintained a particularly active calendar that included Cupa Grivița, school competitions, Șah la Mall, the International Chess Festival Trofeul Galați, and other events. Its principal upcoming project is the 3rd Trofeul Cavalerii Mării Negre, scheduled for October 28–November 1, 2026, in Năvodari.

🎓 Chess Training and School Programs

Youth development is central to the club’s activity. CS Șah Club Galați offers structured chess instruction for children at several levels, ranging from learning the basic rules to advanced tournament preparation. Training includes tactical exercises, strategy, game analysis, tournament practice, and individual preparation. Lucian Jugaru and Adrian-Ion Smărăndoiu have been among the instructors associated with the club’s coaching program. The organization is also closely involved with Șah în Școală initiatives in Galați and Brăila. One example is the continuing program at Școala Gimnazială Dan Barbilian in Galați. Through a 2025–2027 educational project supported by UniCredit Foundation, the school received 25 chess sets, while dozens of pupils participated in organized competition. The club also supports chess in smaller communities. In January 2026, the sixth Cupa Grivița brought together 36 schoolchildren from Grivița, Ivești, and Bucești, demonstrating the club’s wider regional approach to introducing children to tournament chess.

🏆 Tournament Activity

CS Șah Club Galați organizes a broad mix of tournaments for juniors, adults, beginners, and rated competitors. In May 2026, the club organized Șah la Mall at Shopping City Galați together with partner organizations. The tournament program included rated sections for experienced players and separate competitions for less experienced children. The club also continued its involvement with In hoc signo vinces, a major outdoor chess competition organized in cooperation with the parish of Saints Mina, Victor and Vichentie, local schools, CSM Galați, and Șah în Școală. The 11th edition took place on June 6–7, 2026 in Galați. Another important project was the International Chess Festival Trofeul Galați, held in July 2026. Its tournament program included FIDE-rated classical competition and junior sections, continuing the long-running Trofeul Șah Club Galați tradition. These activities give players several routes into organized chess: beginners can start in unrated school events, while established competitors can progress into Romanian Chess Federation and FIDE-rated tournaments.

🌊 Trofeul Cavalerii Mării Negre

The Trofeul Cavalerii Mării Negre has become one of the club’s principal junior chess projects. After earlier editions in Galați and Năvodari, the third tournament will take place from October 28 to November 1, 2026 at Centrul de Afaceri Năvodari. The festival includes four sections. The U20 and U10 competitions for registered players will be FIDE rated, while separate U20 and U10 sections are available for children who are not yet registered competitive players. All sections use a seven-round Swiss system. The FIDE tournaments use classical time controls, while the introductory sections use shorter games. Participation is free, helping make the event accessible to a large junior field. The organizers have announced a substantial range of cash and category awards, including prizes for age groups, female players, rating categories, local participants, and club classifications. Lucian Jugaru serves as the principal registration and tournament contact.

🏛️ Organization and Leadership

Lucian Jugaru is currently listed by the club as President. His direct involvement extends across tournament organization, coaching, school chess, and communication with players and parents. The club’s current leadership information also lists Adrian Chipăilă as Vice President and Octavian Zamfir as General Secretary, with Ionel Sandu and Lucian Oprea serving as members of the leadership structure. Through this combination of youth instruction, frequent local competition, FIDE-rated tournaments, and cooperation with educational institutions, CS Șah Club Galați maintains an active role in chess development across Galați and the surrounding region.
