Comité Départemental du Jeu d’Échecs du Gard, commonly referred to as the Comité du Gard or CDJE 30, is the departmental chess organization responsible for coordinating and developing chess across the Gard department in southern France. The committee operates within the structure of the Fédération Française des Échecs (FFE) and the Ligue des Échecs d’Occitanie. Its responsibilities cover departmental competitions, youth chess, school chess, arbitration, ratings and competition administration, training initiatives, and support for affiliated chess clubs throughout Gard. Pierre Costa currently serves as President. The committee’s management team also includes Cécile Lamouroux as Secretary, Jean-Yves Costa responsible for finances, Patrick Humbert for ratings and competitions, Leila Ferrak for youth chess, Jérôme Canonge for school chess and arbitration, and Marie Rutyna for diversity and inclusion.

🏆 Tournaments & Departmental Competitions

The Comité du Gard coordinates a broad calendar of officially rated tournaments throughout the department. These include classical, rapid and blitz events organized directly by the committee or in cooperation with affiliated clubs. Its competitive program includes the Championnat du Gard, departmental youth championships, school championships, senior and veteran events, and qualifying competitions linked to the French national championship structure. In 2026, for example, the committee’s calendar included tournaments in Nîmes, Alès, Caissargues, Le Grau-du-Roi, and other locations across Gard, reflecting an active network of local organizers and clubs. The committee also works closely with local clubs when staging major departmental events. Échiquier Nîmois is one of its important partners in Nîmes and regularly hosts committee competitions at Espace Création.

👴 Veteran & Senior Chess

The Open Vétéran et Senior Plus du Gard has become one of the committee’s dedicated competitions for older players. The 3ème Open Vétéran et Senior Plus du Gard 2026, also presented as the Open Pierre Dussol, takes place from November 20–22 at Espace Création in Nîmes. The FFE lists the Comité Départemental du Jeu d’Échecs du Gard as the official organizer, working together with Échiquier Nîmois. The tournament is named in honor of Pierre Dussol, a prominent Nîmes player who became French Veterans Champion in 2019. Dussol has long been associated with Échiquier Nîmois and senior chess in the region. The 2026 edition is a five-round FIDE-rated classical tournament and is open not only to players from Gard but also to eligible participants from other departments.

🌱 Youth & School Chess

Youth development represents a major part of the committee’s work. The Comité du Gard organizes the departmental stages of the French Youth Chess Championships, with competitions across the different age categories. These events determine Gard champions and qualifiers for the regional championships of Occitanie. The committee also runs the Championnat Scolaire du Gard for primary schools and secondary schools. The 2026 school championships were organized in Saint-Geniès-de-Malgoirès and provided structured competitive chess for young players representing educational institutions throughout the department. This work is supported by dedicated officials responsible for youth and school chess, helping connect local clubs, schools and regional competition pathways.

🏛️ Club Network & Chess Development

The Comité Départemental du Jeu d’Échecs du Gard acts as the coordinating body for a network of chess clubs distributed across the department. Active clubs can be found in communities including Nîmes, Alès, Bagnols-sur-Cèze, Caissargues, Le Grau-du-Roi, Le Vigan, Redessan, Sauve and Vergèze, among others. The committee assists this network through tournament coordination, official competition structures, youth qualification, arbitration and administrative support. One of its most active partners is Échiquier Nîmois, a club founded in 1967 that currently holds both the FFE Club Formateur and Label Féminin distinctions. The club competes in Nationale 2, Nationale 2 Jeunes and Nationale 1 Féminin and has more than 240 FFE-registered members across Licence A and Licence B. Cooperation between the departmental committee and its clubs enables Gard to maintain a full calendar covering grassroots chess, school competition, youth championships, adult tournaments, senior events and national team chess.

📚 Development of Chess in Gard

The Comité du Gard has played a long-term role in organizing competitive chess across the department and linking local activity to the wider French federation system. Its responsibilities extend beyond staging individual tournaments. The organization coordinates departmental championships, supports club development, manages competitive structures, promotes youth and school chess, and provides officials responsible for ratings, arbitration and other technical matters. The committee has also worked closely with Nîmes chess organizations on major events. Échiquier Nîmois, for example, has helped stage French Championships and other high-level competitions over its history, while the departmental structure provides the link between local clubs, Occitanie and the FFE. Today, the Comité Départemental du Jeu d’Échecs du Gard continues to support chess for children, adults, competitive players, schools and senior players across the department.
