Clubul Sportiv Universitar de Șah București (CSU București) is a major chess training, competition, and tournament organization based in Bucharest, Romania. Founded in 2012, the club has developed into one of Romania’s leading organizations for junior chess. Its principal educational program, Școala de Șah, provides structured chess instruction for children and adults through several training centers across Bucharest as well as online programs. The club is affiliated with the Romanian chess structure and competes regularly in national individual and team championships. CSU București combines junior development, competitive team chess, FIDE-rated tournaments, amateur competitions, online events, training camps, and educational programs. Its tournament portfolio includes the Amateur Chess Open series, CSU Cup, Grand Prix CSU, seasonal Cups, ChessDay Contest, Gaudeamus, youth competitions, and numerous internal events for developing players. The organization also runs summer, winter, and autumn chess camps. Its official program currently reports approximately 600 active members, 16 instructors, and five training locations in Bucharest. Andrada Andronic (Cioteanu) is the current President of Clubul Sportiv Universitar de Șah București and founder/manager of the Școala de Șah program. Adrian Stanca serves as Vice President and Cristian Petrescu as Secretary. The club has enjoyed another highly successful season in 2026, finishing first among participating clubs at the Romanian National Mixed Junior Team Championship and winning two national team titles. Its tournament activity continues in autumn with the Bucharest Chess Classic U2400, scheduled for October 2–4, 2026 in Bucharest.

🎓 Școala de Șah

Școala de Șah is the principal training and development program of CSU București and has operated since the club’s foundation in 2012. The program serves players from beginner level through competitive junior and adult chess. Training is delivered through a structured curriculum and includes both in-person and online lessons. Current locations cover several parts of Bucharest, including Tineretului, Grigorescu, Iancului, 1 Mai, and Gorjului. The Tineretului center on Calea Șerban Vodă serves as the club’s principal training base. The coaching structure includes certified instructors and experienced tournament players. Students are encouraged to progress from introductory competitions into Romanian Federation and FIDE-rated tournaments.

🏆 Junior Chess Success

Junior development has become the club’s strongest competitive area. At the 2026 Romanian National Mixed Junior Team Championship, CSU București finished first in the overall ranking of participating clubs based on its results across the different age categories. The club won two national team titles and two national runner-up titles, while its players collected 16 individual board medals. The U10 team of Aaron Drăgoi, Răzvan Roșu, Daniel Sava, and Maria Rinescu became Romanian champions. CSU București also captured the national title in the U16 category. These results continued a strong sequence of junior performances stretching back to 2019. At the Romanian Chess Gala for the 2025 season, the club received third place among Romania’s leading junior clubs and third place in the category recognizing clubs with the highest number of newly registered players.

🌱 Camps and Chess Development

CSU București organizes several recurring educational projects beyond regular weekly training. The Summer Chess Camp has developed into a national-level program and has welcomed more than 700 children across its first ten editions. Participants come from Bucharest and other parts of Romania. The club also organizes a Winter Chess Camp and an Autumn Chess Camp, creating additional opportunities for intensive chess training during school holidays. Other projects include adult courses through ChessMove, the Grand Prix CSU Online series, family competitions, youth Cups, and educational events designed to introduce children to tournament chess.

♜ Tournament Organization

Tournament organization is a substantial part of CSU București’s activity. The club runs the Amateur Chess Open, which began in December 2023 and has expanded into a recurring competition for players below designated rating limits. The 11th edition was held on June 6–7, 2026 for competitors under 1800 Elo. Other established events include the Cupa CSU de Șah București, which has reached ten editions, and several FIDE- or Romanian Chess Federation-rated tournaments. The club also maintains regular internal competitions for its students, allowing beginners to gain tournament experience before entering larger rated events.

🌟 Bucharest Chess Classic U2400 2026

The Bucharest Chess Classic U2400 is a new major classical tournament organized through the Școala de Șah competition program. The event is scheduled for October 2–4, 2026 in Bucharest and is officially approved by the Romanian Chess Federation. The competition consists of six rounds of classical chess with a time control of 60 minutes plus 30 seconds per move. It is intended for players below the tournament’s U2400 rating ceiling. The organizers have announced a guaranteed prize fund of 11,800 RON. Registration is managed directly through Școala de Șah, further expanding CSU București’s calendar from primarily junior and amateur events toward larger open FIDE-rated competitions.
