♟️ About Club Sportiv Pegas Cluj
Club Sportiv Pegas Cluj is a chess club, training center, and tournament organizer based in Cluj-Napoca, Romania. Active since 2010, the club works primarily with children and young players while also providing chess activities for teenagers and adults. Its program combines regular instruction, competitive preparation, official tournaments, community events, and participation in competitions across Romania. The club is led by Alin Marcu-Lăpădat, its founder and President. He has worked as a chess instructor for many years and has also been involved in tournament organization and Romanian chess arbitration. The current coaching structure includes Alin Marcu, Alin Toma, and FIDE Master Alexandru Pop, allowing the club to offer instruction from the introductory level through performance training. Pegas Cluj operates from its chess center on Strada Iuliu Maniu 2 in central Cluj-Napoca. The club emphasizes fair play, strategic thinking, concentration, responsibility, and social development alongside competitive results. Therefore, its activities are designed not only for experienced tournament players but also for children taking their first steps in chess.🏆 Tournaments & Chess Activities
Tournament organization has been part of Pegas Cluj’s activity since its early years. The club currently maintains the recurring Pegas Chess Festival circuit, with Winter, Spring, Summer, and Autumn editions staged during the year. These competitions combine Open sections with dedicated junior groups and, depending on the edition, classical, rapid, and blitz chess. The Pegas Summer Chess Festival 2026, for example, reached its third edition at the Bosch Engineering Center in Cluj-Napoca. Its rapid competition used an eight-round Swiss system at 10 minutes plus 5 seconds per move and offered an 8,000 lei prize fund. The festival also included separate U10 and U8 competitions and a family-chess program. The Pegas Autumn Festival 2026 expanded the format further. It included a FIDE- and Romanian Chess Federation-rated classical Open, junior U10 and U8 sections, and a separate Blitz competition. The festival offered 7,500 lei in guaranteed prizes and brought together both Pegas players and competitors from other Romanian clubs. Another recurring project is the LIONS Chess Festival. The tournament began in 2010 and reached its 15th edition in 2025. Organized with Lions Club support, the festival has traditionally focused strongly on children and has become one of the club’s longest-running chess initiatives.🌍 Transilvania Chess Festival
In 2026, Pegas Cluj launched another major project with the first Transilvania Chess Festival. The event is scheduled for November 14–15, 2026, at Grand Hotel Italia in Cluj-Napoca and is open to both junior and adult players. The tournament uses a 10-round Swiss Rapid format with Romanian Chess Federation-accredited arbiters. It also offers a headline €10,000 prize fund, making it significantly larger than the club’s regular seasonal tournaments. Transilvania Chess Festival represents an important expansion of Pegas Cluj’s tournament program. While the Winter, Spring, Summer, and Autumn festivals provide recurring local and regional competition, the new event is designed around a larger playing venue, a substantial prize fund, and broader participation. The club also helps its own players enter the festival and supports the registration process. In this way, the event connects the organization’s training program directly with a larger competitive opportunity in its home city.🌱 Junior Chess & Development
Junior development remains at the center of the club’s work. Pegas Cluj currently organizes several training levels so that children can progress gradually from learning the rules to preparing for rated competition. The Beginner group primarily serves children aged 5–9 in their first year of chess. Intermediate training is aimed at players who already understand the fundamentals, while Advanced groups work with children who have several years of experience. A separate Performance group provides longer sessions for players actively preparing for competitions. Competitive experience complements these lessons. Pegas players regularly participate in club tournaments as well as events from the Romanian Chess Federation calendar. Coaches also accompany groups to external competitions, which gives young players support before, during, and after their games. The club has also taken chess outside the traditional tournament hall. Recent activities have included open-air chess during the Cluj Days, simultaneous exhibitions, giant chess events, mall activities, and family-oriented programs. These initiatives introduce chess to new audiences while giving existing members a more varied club experience.📚 History & Development
Pegas Cluj has operated in Cluj-Napoca since 2010. From its early years, the club combined chess instruction with competition organization, particularly for children. Alin Marcu-Lăpădat has remained closely connected with both sides of that work as founder, instructor, organizer, and President. The club’s early tournament activity included the International LIONS Festival and other competitions in Cluj-Napoca. Over time, Pegas developed a more regular event structure, eventually creating its current seasonal circuit of Winter, Spring, Summer, and Autumn festivals. Its training activity has developed in parallel. Today, the club offers several levels for children, performance-oriented coaching, and a dedicated group for teenagers and adults. FIDE Master Alexandru Pop currently leads the adult group, while younger players work within structured age and ability levels. The creation of Transilvania Chess Festival in 2026 marks another stage in the club’s development. It adds a large international-style rapid event to a calendar that already includes rated tournaments, junior competitions, community chess, and year-round coaching.
