♟️ About Club Escacs Montserrat
Club Escacs Montserrat is an active chess club and tournament organizer based in Montserrat, Valencia, Spain. The club operates from its permanent premises on Carrer Alfredo García and participates in competitions governed by the Federació d’Escacs de la Comunitat Valenciana (FACV). Its program combines federated team chess, rated tournaments, youth competitions, rapid and blitz events, and local chess activities. Tournament organization is one of the club’s strongest areas. Club Escacs Montserrat runs the long-standing Open Internacional Poble de Montserrat, as well as youth and rapid tournaments at its own premises. In 2026, the club organized the Rapid d’Estiu de Montserrat and the XVII Torneig Juvenil Montserrat in June. Moreover, its players continue to compete in the Valencian Interclubs structure, including the Primera Provincial Valencia Centro competition. Manuel Antonio Fernández Calabuig is a longstanding operational contact connected with the club and its tournaments. He is also an International Arbiter and serves on the arbiting team of the club’s principal international open. Meanwhile, León Fernández García is Tournament Director of the XIX Open Internacional Poble de Montserrat 2026, which is taking place from August 24–30, 2026.🏆 Tournament Activity
Club Escacs Montserrat maintains a varied annual competition program rather than concentrating on a single event. Its tournaments cover classical, rapid, blitz, and youth chess, giving both experienced competitors and developing players opportunities to play locally. On June 13, 2026, the club hosted the Rapid d’Estiu de Montserrat at its headquarters. The tournament consisted of eight rounds at a time control of 10 minutes + 3 seconds per move and counted for rapid rating. The following day, the club organized the XVII Torneig Juvenil Montserrat, an open event for players under 18. The youth tournament used seven rounds at 7 minutes + 3 seconds per move. Separate awards covered the U18, U16, U14, U12, U10, and U8 categories. Consequently, the event provided a competitive pathway for young players across several age groups while keeping entry accessible to developing juniors.🌱 Youth Chess and Club Development
Youth chess has an established place within Club Escacs Montserrat’s program. The annual Torneig Juvenil Montserrat has reached seventeen editions, demonstrating the club’s sustained commitment to junior competition. The club’s permanent playing venue allows it to organize tournaments, training activities, and regular club sessions throughout the season. In addition, younger club members participate in external school and provincial events across the Valencian Community. This mixture of local training and organized competition gives juniors a direct route from club chess into formal tournament play. At the same time, adult members can participate in the club’s rapid, blitz, classical, and Interclubs activities.♜ Team Chess
Club Escacs Montserrat competes within the FACV’s regional team structure. During the 2026 Interclubs season, the club competed in the Primera Provincial Valencia Centro division, continuing its regular involvement in federated team chess. Team competition complements the club’s tournament-organizing work. Players therefore have opportunities to represent Montserrat in league matches while also playing individual tournaments throughout the year. The club’s headquarters on Carrer Alfredo García serves as its regular playing base. FACV records identify the same location for official club activity, which confirms its role as a permanent chess venue rather than a temporary tournament site.🌟 XIX Open Internacional Poble de Montserrat 2026
The XIX Open Internacional Poble de Montserrat 2026 is taking place from August 24–30, 2026 at the Casa de la Cultura de Montserrat. It is the club’s principal international competition and one of the clearest examples of its tournament-organizing activity. The 2026 edition uses a nine-round Swiss system with a classical time control of 90 minutes + 30 seconds per move. The tournament counts for FIDE rating and is also valid for an IM norm. Although the original regulations set an initial capacity of 80 players, the club reported 96 participants from 11 nationalities and 41 clubs at the start of the event. León Fernández García serves as Tournament Director. The arbiting team includes IA Manuel Antonio Fernández Calabuig, NA José María Romero Marcos, and RA Antonio Abad Gramaje. In addition, the event receives support from the Ajuntament de Montserrat, the FACV, the Generalitat Valenciana, the Diputación Provincial de Valencia, and other local partners. Alongside the main tournament, the club has organized additional chess activities during Open week. These have included exhibitions and instructional activities, further connecting the international competition with the local chess community.
