♟️ About Club El Mundo del Ajedrez
Club El Mundo del Ajedrez, also known as Club Mundo del Ajedrez, is a chess club and tournament organizer based in Comodoro Rivadavia, Chubut, Argentina. The organization was formally founded on June 2, 1990 and has developed into one of the established chess institutions in southern Argentina. From its base in Comodoro Rivadavia, the club promotes competitive chess, training, youth development, and regional cooperation across Patagonia. The club provides chess classes for children, juniors, and adults, ranging from introductory instruction to advanced competitive preparation. It also organizes local tournaments, youth competitions, FIDE-rated events, team championships, and school chess activities. Moreover, its players regularly represent Comodoro Rivadavia in provincial, national, and international tournaments. The club maintains strong links with Comodoro Deportes and other institutions that support chess development in the city. Mauricio Saavedra became President of Club Mundo del Ajedrez in 2026 following the election of a new committee. Under the new leadership, the club has maintained an especially active year. It hosted the Chubut Provincial Team Championship, won the provincial team title, organized the first Comodoro School Chess Olympiad, and expanded its junior program. The club is now preparing the Abierto Internacional Ciudad de Comodoro Rivadavia 2026, scheduled for November 12–15 with ARS 5 million in announced prizes.📜 History and Development
The club was founded on June 2, 1990 by a group of local chess enthusiasts led by Emilio de Kirchmayr. Early members included Fernando Rocabado, Gustavo Krenek, Esteban Anitúa, and Lorenzo Huichapani. The founders wanted to give Comodoro Rivadavia’s chess community a permanent institutional structure. Youth development became an important part of that mission from the beginning. Over the following decades, El Mundo del Ajedrez developed players, coaches, organizers, and arbiters while maintaining regular competitive activity in the city. Its headquarters on Santa Clara Street at the corner with Avenida Kennedy became the center of its teaching, club play, and local tournaments.🎓 Youth and School Chess
Youth development remains one of the club’s principal activities. In 2026, the club offered regular weekday chess classes. Coaches involved during the year included Juan Carlos Mendoza, Adrián Muruchi, Germán Leiva, Maximiliano Aguinaga, and FM Andrés Aguilar. In July, El Mundo del Ajedrez organized the first School Chess Olympiad of Comodoro Rivadavia together with Escuela Provincial Nº737. The event brought together teams from eight secondary schools. The program combined competition with educational objectives and offered the leading teams several months of complimentary chess training. The club also organized its first youth tournament of the year in June. The event attracted 42 players across U8, U10, and U14 categories.♜ Provincial Team Chess
Team competition produced one of the club’s strongest results of 2026. From May 1–3, Club Mundo del Ajedrez hosted the Chubut Provincial Team Championship at Club Huergo in Comodoro Rivadavia. Teams from Comodoro Rivadavia, Puerto Madryn, Trelew, Esquel, and Lago Puelo competed in the six-round event. El Mundo del Ajedrez won the championship undefeated, scoring five match victories and one draw. The winning team included Maximiliano Aguinaga, FM Andrés Aguilar, Martín Salamanca, Gabriel Ulloa, and Fernando Rocabado. The result ended three consecutive years of dominance by Puerto Madryn and confirmed the club’s strength within competitive chess in Chubut.🏆 Tournament and Competitive Activity
El Mundo del Ajedrez organizes tournaments for several different levels. Its calendar includes youth competitions, open tournaments, rapid and blitz events, internal championships, and FIDE-rated competition. The club also sends delegations to major tournaments elsewhere in Patagonia and Argentina. In August 2026, a six-player delegation represented the club at the Abierto Internacional Ciudad de Puerto Madryn. FM Andrés Aguilar and Maximiliano Aguinaga both finished on five points and placed among the leading players. The club also staged the Copa General San Martín in July. Maximiliano Aguinaga won the top section with a perfect 5/5. These activities combine local development with regular exposure to stronger regional and national competition.🌟 Abierto Internacional Ciudad de Comodoro Rivadavia 2026
The club’s principal upcoming event is the Abierto Internacional Ciudad de Comodoro Rivadavia 2026, scheduled for November 12–15, 2026. The tournament will use a seven-round Swiss system and is planned as an international-rated event. The organizers have announced ARS 5,000,000 in prize money. Eight-time Argentine Champion GM Diego Flores is among the headline players announced for the tournament. The competition represents a major step in the club’s 2026 program. It also supports the organization’s wider ambition to establish Comodoro Rivadavia as an important tournament destination within Patagonian chess. Tournament registration and arbiter communication are being coordinated by Katherina Draguicevich and Marcos Pirola, while Club Mundo del Ajedrez remains the host organization.🏛️ Organization and Leadership
Mauricio Saavedra serves as President of Club Mundo del Ajedrez following the club’s 2026 leadership renewal. Maximiliano Aguinaga is another important figure in the current organization. Alongside his competitive activity, he has been involved in the club’s administration and development projects. The new committee has focused on tournament organization, chess education, institutional partnerships, and rebuilding larger events in Comodoro Rivadavia. The club also continues to cooperate with Comodoro Deportes, local schools, businesses, and regional chess organizations.
