Lille Université Club Échiquier du Nord (LUC EDN) is a historic chess club based in Lille, Hauts-de-France, France. Its origins date to 1846, making Échiquier du Nord one of the oldest chess clubs in France. In 2006, Échiquier du Nord joined the Lille Université Club structure and became the present LUC EDN. The club is affiliated with the Fédération Française des Échecs (FFE) and is one of the largest chess organizations in the Hauts-de-France region. LUC EDN combines national team competition with a substantial chess-school and community program. Approximately 300 players are involved in the club, with teams participating across adult, youth, and women’s competitions. Members can attend structured lessons, Friday blitz evenings, Saturday internal tournaments, training camps during school holidays, and recreational chess sessions. 📜 Historic Chess Club of Lille

The origins of Échiquier du Nord go back to 1846. Historical chess publications from that period document the existence of the Lille organization, giving the club an unusually long continuous connection with French chess history. A major modern transition came in 2006, when Échiquier du Nord integrated into Lille Université Club, one of the city’s major multisport organizations. Four years later, the club created the LUCOPEN, establishing an international tournament that became one of the central events in its annual calendar. Today, LUC EDN combines this historical identity with a large modern membership, extensive training activity, and participation at several levels of French team chess.

Team competition is one of the club’s principal activities. LUC EDN fields numerous teams, allowing members to compete from national divisions through departmental competition. The current Fédération Française des Échecs profile lists the club’s leading adult team in Nationale 2. Its youth program competes at Top Jeunes level, while the leading women’s team plays in Nationale 2 Féminine. The FFE also recognizes LUC EDN with both the Club Formateur and Label Féminin distinctions, reflecting the club’s commitment to player development and women’s chess. Across its wider structure, LUC EDN participates in adult interclubs, youth interclubs, women’s team chess, the Coupe Loubatière, and the Coupe de la Parité.

🎓 Youth Chess and Training

Training is a major part of club life. LUC EDN offers courses for children and adults at several playing levels, from beginners to experienced competitive players. Youth lessons are held during the week and on Saturdays, while the coaching team includes titled and experienced players. Current instructors include FM Rabah, IM Benjamin, Gaël, Jonathan, Boris, Ouahid, and other club trainers. Adult programs include dedicated improvement groups with rating objectives, beginner and parent courses, and a regular course focused on the history of chess. The club also organizes chess camps during school holidays. These programs combine chess instruction with activities such as table tennis, board games, and outdoor recreation.

🌟 LUCOPEN

The LUCOPEN is the club’s flagship international tournament. LUC EDN launched the event in 2010, and it has developed into a traditional spring competition welcoming players from beginners to grandmasters. The 14th Open du Lille Université Club Échiquier du Nord took place from April 11–15, 2026 at Halle Vallin in Villeneuve-d’Ascq. A total of 94 players competed over nine classical rounds. The time control was 90 minutes plus 30 seconds per move, and the tournament was FIDE-rated and eligible for international title norms. Young French player Zayne-Eddine El Zein produced an outstanding performance to win the tournament with 7.5/9 and a performance rating above 2400. The event again attracted strong competitors from the Hauts-de-France region and elsewhere in France. Jean-Jacques Flahaut served as organizer, while Fabrice Casier was the tournament arbiter.

⚡ Rapid, Blitz and Club Chess

LUC EDN also maintains a busy schedule outside classical chess. Friday evenings regularly feature blitz chess, while Saturday afternoons include the club’s internal tournament. The club introduced its Rapide de Rentrée in 2023. The tournament has since become an annual September event. The 4th Rapide de Rentrée is scheduled for September 27, 2026 at the club’s Lille premises. The FIDE-rated event will consist of nine rounds at 12 minutes plus 3 seconds per move, with participation limited to 80 players. LUC EDN also occasionally organizes hand-and-brain tournaments, in which two-player teams divide responsibility between selecting the piece and choosing the actual move.

The club’s current board is headed by Jean-Jacques Flahaut – President, with Stéphane Faure – Technical Director, Jérôme Coutel – Secretary, and Frédéric Dekeukelaere – Treasurer.
