🏆 Gran Hotel Bali Chess Festival

The Festival Internacional de Ajedrez Gran Hotel Bali is the flagship project of Club Deportivo Tossal de la Cala. It is staged annually in Benidorm and combines several tournaments and chess activities over an extended festival period. The main International Open is designed for stronger players and includes FIDE rating and title-norm opportunities. Alongside it, the U2000 tournament provides a major international competition for amateur and developing players. Youth and team competitions form another important part of the program. Different age categories allow clubs and junior teams to compete during the same festival, while blitz tournaments, simultaneous exhibitions, and other activities add faster and more social forms of chess. The partnership with Gran Hotel Bali gives the event a distinctive format. Players can compete, stay, and participate in associated activities at one principal venue, creating a tournament experience that combines chess with Benidorm’s tourism infrastructure.

🌍 Record-Breaking 2025 Edition

The XXII Festival Internacional Gran Hotel Bali 2025 became one of the largest editions in the festival’s history. Across all competitions, it welcomed more than 1,600 participants representing 43 nationalities. The principal Open alone attracted more than 200 players from 41 nationalities and included 99 FIDE-titled competitors, among them 16 GM/WGM players. Ukrainian Grandmaster Vitaliy Bernadskiy won the tournament outright with 7.5/9. The competitive level also produced four international title norms. Hussain Besou, José Sánchez Negreiros, and Vladyslav Sydoryka achieved IM norms, while Charvi A. earned a WIM norm. Participation records extended beyond the main Open. The Spanish Mixed Pairs Blitz Championship attracted 107 teams, while the Copa de España de Equipos reached 144 teams. These numbers demonstrated the organizational capacity required to run multiple large competitions during the same festival.

🎓 Youth, Amateur and Team Chess

Club Deportivo Tossal de la Cala gives substantial space to players outside the elite Open. The annual Grupo B / U2000 tournament has developed into a large international competition in its own right. In 2025, more than 300 players from 35 countries competed in the U2000 section. Sandeep Santhosh won the nine-round tournament with 8/9 after tie-breaks. Youth team chess is another major element. The festival hosts age-group competitions for U12, U14, U16, and U18 teams, providing clubs with an opportunity to combine international travel with team competition. For 2026, the organizer is also developing a broader U2400 international team competition, extending the festival’s team format beyond the established youth categories.

🌟 Gran Hotel Bali Chess Festival 2026

The XXIII Festival Internacional de Ajedrez Gran Hotel Bali 2026 is scheduled in Benidorm from late November through early December. Its principal XXIII Open Internacional Gran Hotel Bali will run from November 28 to December 5, 2026. The event uses a nine-round Swiss system with a time control of 90 minutes plus 30 seconds per move and is calculated for international FIDE rating. Luis Barona Boj serves as Tournament Director. IA Vicente Fernando Gómez Roca is Chief Arbiter, while IA Pablo A. Arranz Martín serves as Deputy Chief Arbiter. The festival program includes the Open A, the U2000 amateur tournament, U2400 team competition, U12–U18 team events, and a simultaneous exhibition featuring GM Gata Kamsky. The published 2026 starting list already includes grandmasters and international masters from numerous federations.
