The history of Club d’Échecs Fontenay-le-Comte dates to February 1994. According to the club's own historical record, the organization was created on February 14, 1994 under the name Capablanca. Its original headquarters were located at the Le Magnolia cafeteria, and its earliest activity focused mainly on recreational chess between friends. French association records give an administrative creation date of February 16, 1994, followed by publication in the Journal Officiel on March 2. The association remains active under RNA number W851006966, with its latest recorded declaration dating from June 2024. The club gradually developed beyond informal chess. In September 2002, it became affiliated with the Fédération Française des Échecs. This transition allowed the organization to enter official individual and team competitions while maintaining the friendly community atmosphere that characterized its beginnings. Over the years, the club has also organized local tournaments, Vendée competitions, training activities, school chess events, rapid tournaments, and instructional sessions. More recently, its competitive program expanded further with the launch of the FIDE-rated Fontenay-le-Comte Open.

🏆 Open de Fontenay-le-Comte

The Open de Fontenay-le-Comte is the club's principal FIDE-rated tournament project. The first FIDE Open took place on September 27–28, 2025 at Salle Saint Médard. It marked an important step in the club's tournament activity by establishing a locally organized classical competition with FIDE rating. The tournament uses a five-round Swiss format with a classical time control of 60 minutes plus a 30-second increment per move. The event is designed as a compact weekend competition for licensed players and combines rated chess with a practical two-day schedule. Following the first edition, the club organized the 2nd Open d’Échecs de Fontenay-le-Comte for September 26–27, 2026. The tournament is again FFE homologated and FIDE-rated, with participation limited to 100 players and an Elo ceiling of 2400. Bertrand Daviet serves as the principal organizer and public contact for the event. Nicolas Potiron is the chief arbiter for the 2026 edition.

🎓 Youth Chess and Education

Youth chess forms a regular part of the club's weekly program. A dedicated Wednesday session provides instruction specifically for young players, while children can also participate in the club's broader weekend activities. The club supports beginners as well as juniors interested in progressing toward official competition. Its educational work extends beyond regular club sessions. On June 3, 2026, club members organized the second inter-college and high-school chess tournament involving students from Collège Viète, Collège Tiraqueau, and Lycée Rabelais. The competition attracted 23 participants and was played over seven rapid rounds. This type of activity connects the club directly with local schools and gives young players an accessible introduction to organized chess. Later that month, the club also delivered a public chess initiation in La Caillère-Saint-Hilaire, extending its educational activity beyond Fontenay-le-Comte itself.

Club d’Échecs Fontenay-le-Comte participates in the official Fédération Française des Échecs team structure. Its adult Interclubs team currently competes at regional level, while its youth team also participates in a regional division. The club regularly enters players and teams in competitions elsewhere in Vendée and the wider Pays de la Loire region. In November 2025, for example, Fontenay-le-Comte entered four teams in the departmental stage of the Coupe Jean-Claude Loubatière. Members also participate individually in classical, rapid, and blitz tournaments throughout France. These external events complement the club's regular sessions by giving players experience against a wider range of opponents.
