Club d’Échecs de Veigy-Foncenex is an active chess organization based in Veigy-Foncenex, Haute-Savoie, France, close to the French-Swiss border and the Geneva metropolitan area. The association was founded on December 26, 2012 with the objective of developing chess in Veigy-Foncenex and the surrounding communities. It welcomes players from approximately five years of age and combines junior instruction, adult chess, competitive training, team competition, tournaments, and holiday chess camps. The club has grown substantially since its foundation. The French Chess Federation currently records 95 Licence A and 44 Licence B players, giving the organization a membership of nearly 140 registered players. Its senior team competes in Nationale 4, while its youth team competes in Nationale 2 Jeunes. Michel Carobbio serves as President. David Navarro is one of the club’s principal organizers and public contacts and is closely involved in its tournaments, communications, and competitive activities.

🏆 Tournaments & Chess Activities

Tournament organization is an important part of the club’s program. Its recurring events include the Rapide de Veigy-Foncenex, the Blitz de Veigy, junior rapid tournaments, training camps, and other competitions in Haute-Savoie. The annual rapid tournament has developed into a substantial regional event. The 11th Rapide de Veigy-Foncenex in June 2026 attracted 100 players across its Principal and Accession sections. The main tournament was won by FIDE Master Michael Deleva, while club member Louis Jourdain achieved an excellent sixth-place finish. The club also organizes the Blitz de Veigy, which reached its sixth edition in 2026. The 6ème Blitz de Veigy 2026 is an eleven-round FIDE-rated blitz tournament played at 3+2. It offers €800 in prizes, including €300 for first place, along with rating, women’s, veteran, and junior awards. David Navarro is the Tournament Director and Gilles Horn serves as Chief Arbiter. These recurring events give members opportunities to compete locally while also attracting players from other parts of France and neighboring Switzerland.

🌱 Junior Chess & Training

Junior development is one of the strongest elements of the Club d’Échecs de Veigy-Foncenex program. The club runs several structured training groups. Beginners aged approximately five to seven learn the basic rules, piece movement, elementary tactics, and strategy. Intermediate players receive more advanced tactical and strategic instruction, while the Espoirs group prepares motivated juniors for tournament competition. An Elite program is available for stronger players around the 1500 Elo level and above. Training is not limited to Veigy-Foncenex. The club also provides chess instruction in Douvaine and Bons-en-Chablais, extending its educational activity across the surrounding area. Adult sessions are offered alongside the junior program. The club’s young players regularly participate in the Challenge des Jeunes des Savoie, departmental championships, Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes youth championships, and the French Youth Championships. The club’s competition pathway is designed to allow beginners to progress gradually toward regional and national events. In March 2026, the inaugural Rapide Jeunes de Veigy attracted 99 players aged 5 to 18. Veigy-Foncenex players won five of the twelve trophies awarded, demonstrating the strength of the club’s junior program.

Club d’Échecs de Veigy-Foncenex participates actively in the French interclub system. Its senior team currently plays in Nationale 4, while the youth team competes at the significantly higher Nationale 2 Jeunes level. This provides an important bridge between weekly training and competitive team chess. The club also has qualified federation personnel within its membership. Marjorie Suaton, for example, is registered by the FFE as both a chess instructor and match arbiter. Club juniors have achieved notable results at departmental and regional level. In 2026, players from Veigy-Foncenex participated in the French Youth Championship in Albi and the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes youth championship, while several members earned prizes and departmental titles at regional competitions.

Since its creation in 2012, the club has evolved from a local association into a sizeable regional chess organization.
