Club d’Échecs de Payerne is a historic and highly active chess organization based in Payerne, Canton of Vaud, Switzerland. Founded on February 3, 1941, the club has promoted competitive, recreational, and junior chess in the Broye region for more than eight decades. Today, it combines a strong national-level playing team with an extensive local tournament and training program. The club meets at the Ancien Hôpital on Rue du Châtelard 3 in Payerne, where regular chess activities take place on Thursday evenings. Players can participate in club competitions, training, team matches, classical tournaments, rapid chess, blitz, and informal games. Moreover, the organization welcomes both experienced competitors and people who want to discover over-the-board chess. Lucas Bueche currently serves as President of Club d’Échecs de Payerne. The organization is affiliated with the Swiss chess structure and the Fédération Vaudoise des Échecs. 🏆 Open de la Broye and Swiss Junior Qualification

One of the club’s largest recurring events is the Open de la Broye, which takes place alongside an official qualification tournament for the Swiss Individual Junior Championships. The format brings several junior age categories together with separate open sections for adult and club players. Therefore, the tournament creates an unusual environment where talented young players, experienced competitors, families, coaches, and arbiters all meet during the same weekend. The 2026 edition took place from March 27–29 at the Halle des Fêtes in Payerne. The Swiss junior qualification tournament attracted 277 participants, while another 78 players competed in the two Open de la Broye sections. The junior program covered the U10, U12, U14, U16, and U18 categories. Meanwhile, Open A and Open B provided additional FIDE-rated competition for players outside the junior championship pathway. The club will again organize the Open de la Broye and a junior competition in March 2027, confirming the event’s continuing place on the Swiss tournament calendar.

🥇 Swiss Group Champions 2026

Club d’Échecs de Payerne achieved one of the greatest sporting successes in its history during the 2025–26 Schweizerische Gruppenmeisterschaft – Swiss Group Championship. Payerne competed in the 1. Bundesliga, the highest division of the competition. The team entered the final stages of the season in a close title race with Kirchberg. A decisive 4½–3½ victory over Kirchberg in the sixth round gave Payerne a crucial advantage. The club then defeated Wollishofen 5–3 in the final round on March 7, 2026. As a result, Payerne became Swiss Group Champion for the first time in the 96-year history of the competition. The championship squad included several titled players, including GM Joseph Girel, WIM Sofiia Hryzlova, IM Rémy Degraeve, IM Theo Stijve, FM Enis Zuferi, FM Aurélien Pomini, FM Simon Stoeri, and FM Vitalii Gryshko. Franck Yersin served as team captain.

🎓 Junior Chess and Player Development

Youth development has long been one of the defining strengths of Club d’Échecs de Payerne. The club provides structured opportunities for children and teenagers to learn chess and progress toward competitive play. Junior players receive training before moving into club tournaments, regional competitions, Swiss youth championships, and team events. This work has received national recognition. In 2020, Club d’Échecs de Payerne received the development prize of the Swiss Youth Chess Foundation for its contribution to junior chess. The club has also achieved strong competitive results at youth-team level. In 2024, Payerne finished runner-up in the Swiss Junior Team Championship after reaching the national final. The junior program remained among Switzerland’s strongest in 2026. Payerne again reached the national championship semifinals, underlining the continuity of its youth-development system. Moreover, hosting a major Swiss junior qualification tournament each year allows the club to contribute to youth chess well beyond its own membership.

Club d’Échecs de Payerne maintains an unusually broad tournament calendar throughout the year. The Open de Payerne is one of its established classical competitions. The 21st edition took place in 2026, with separate Open A and Open B sections based on player rating. The club also runs its long-form Tournoi d’Hiver – Winter Tournament. The 2025–26 edition featured three groups and allowed members to play regular classical games throughout the club season. Fast chess forms another important part of the calendar. Payerne organizes blitz competitions and the recurring Grand Prix de Payerne, which returns on November 22, 2026. These events complement the club’s national team commitments. Consequently, members can participate in competitive chess throughout the year across several time controls and playing formats.

🌍 Major Events and Tournament Tradition

The club’s experience extends beyond its regular annual competitions. A particularly important milestone came in 2016, when Club d’Échecs de Payerne celebrated its 75th anniversary by organizing the Swiss Federal Chess Tournament – Tournoi fédéral. The event brought hundreds of competitors from across Switzerland and abroad to Payerne. It was one of the largest chess tournaments staged in the region and required extensive cooperation between the club, municipal authorities, arbiters, volunteers, and local partners. The organization also has a long tradition of producing strong players and coaches. Swiss international competitors Simon Stoeri and Laura Stoeri developed through the Payerne chess environment, while many other players have represented the club in national leagues and individual championships. Today, that history continues through major open tournaments, national youth events, junior development, and high-level team competition.

Club d’Échecs de Payerne was founded on February 3, 1941. The club has documented its history in a dedicated publication covering its first 70 years. During those decades, the organization developed from a local chess association into one of the most active clubs in French-speaking Switzerland. Successive generations of volunteers, trainers, presidents, players, and tournament organizers expanded both the competitive and educational sides of the club. The organization later developed a particularly strong junior program and established several recurring tournaments. Meanwhile, its teams progressed through the Swiss league structure and increasingly competed at national level. The club’s modern period combines these traditions with online tournament administration, FIDE-rated events, live results, structured youth development, and ambitious national teams. The 2026 Swiss Group Championship title represents a new sporting high point in this history.
