Club de Ajedrez San Mateo

♟️ About the Organizer

Club de Ajedrez San Mateo is a community chess organization based in Vega de San Mateo, Gran Canaria, Spain. The club was founded in 1988. Since then, it has supported competitive chess, youth training, and public chess activities across the municipality. It also appears officially as Club Deportivo de Ajedrez San Mateo in regional sports records.

The club welcomes children, adults, beginners, and experienced tournament players. Moreover, it provides a regular meeting place where members can train, play casual games, and prepare for official competitions. Its headquarters occupy the first floor of the municipal Social Services building on Calle del Agua. The Insular Chess Federation of Gran Canaria lists the same address as the club’s official base.

Club de Ajedrez San Mateo works closely with the Vega de San Mateo Town Council, the Canary Islands Chess Federation, and the Insular Chess Federation of Gran Canaria. In addition, local institutions and businesses support many of its competitions. These partnerships help the club organize events for both local players and international visitors.

José Miguel Sánchez Rivero serves as a principal tournament director and club contact. He has also represented the club as vice-president at official tournament presentations. Meanwhile, Miguel Ángel Mayor supports event direction and federation coordination. Together, the organizing team manages entries, schedules, venues, technical officials, and player communication.

🏆 Tournaments and Chess Events

The Torneo Internacional de Ajedrez Vega de San Mateo is the club’s leading international event. The competition brings titled players, club competitors, juniors, and international visitors to Gran Canaria. Furthermore, the main classical tournament offers FIDE rating and opportunities to achieve international norms.

The fourth edition takes place from August 31 to September 6, 2026. It uses a nine-round Swiss system and a classical time control. In addition, the program includes the Activo Internacional Francisco Rodríguez Pulido “Paco Pulido” and a nocturnal blitz tournament. Therefore, participants can compete at three different playing speeds during the festival.

Another traditional competition is the Torneo de Ajedrez Tinamar. The event reached its 35th edition in 2025 and remains an important part of the local chess program. It includes general prizes, junior categories, women’s awards, veteran prizes, and recognition for local players. Moreover, the organizers submit the results for FIDE rating.

The club also organizes the Circuito Blitz Barrios de San Mateo. This series brings short-format chess to different neighborhoods within the municipality. The fourth circuit featured four separate events in 2025. As a result, residents can enjoy organized chess outside the club’s main venue.

Through these events, the club manages tournament regulations, registrations, pairings, arbitration, rating submissions, prizes, and closing ceremonies. It also cooperates with public authorities, federations, sponsors, and local media. Consequently, its tournaments promote both competitive chess and the wider municipality of Vega de San Mateo.

🌱 Youth Chess and Community Development

Youth development plays an important role in the club’s program. The organization supports school chess, junior tournaments, and age-group competitions across Gran Canaria. In addition, it has helped host official island championships for young players.

The Torneo Escolar Navideño Vega de San Mateo gives school-age players regular tournament experience. The competition reached its eleventh edition in 2025. Therefore, it provides an established entry point for children who want to move from school chess into organized competition.

The club has also supported chess activities inside local schools. Coaches and monitors supervise lessons, practical games, and educational sessions. Through these projects, children develop concentration, planning, problem-solving skills, and sporting discipline.

Community participation extends beyond formal tournaments. For example, the club has organized a Christmas solidarity tournament where players contribute toys for local children. Moreover, neighborhood blitz events bring chess directly into different parts of San Mateo. These activities combine competition with social responsibility and public engagement.

Through training, school cooperation, rated tournaments, and public events, Club de Ajedrez San Mateo supports players at every stage. Beginners can discover chess in an accessible setting. Meanwhile, stronger competitors can progress toward regional, national, and international events.
