Club de Ajedrez Los Trebejos, also known as Los Trebejos de Walter Estrada, is a historic chess club based in Montevideo, Uruguay. The organization began its official activities on June 19, 1972, with a team match against Club Boston.
The club carries the name of its founder, Walter Estrada, one of the leading figures in Uruguayan chess history. Estrada won the national championship several times and represented Uruguay in international competition. Moreover, he played a central role in the club’s early tournaments, administration, and daily activities.
During its long history, Los Trebejos has welcomed many prominent Uruguayan players. These include national champions, international representatives, experienced masters, and younger talents. The club obtained legal recognition in 1975 and has continued its work through several generations of players.
Today, its headquarters on Andes Street provide a regular venue for chess lessons, informal games, club meetings, and rated competition. Therefore, the organization remains an active meeting point for the Montevideo chess community.
🏆 Tournaments and Competitive Chess
Los Trebejos organizes classical, rapid, and blitz tournaments throughout the year. Its program includes open Swiss events, closed round-robin competitions, team tournaments, paired-player events, and rating-based sections.
The club regularly registers competitions for FIDE international rating. Recent events include the Standard Invierno Trebejos, weekend closed tournaments, rapid competitions, and the Duplas Blitz Trebejos. These different formats allow both experienced players and developing competitors to participate.
In addition, the club works with the Federación Uruguaya de Ajedrez and other local organizations. It has helped organize the Uruguayan Team Rapid and Blitz Championships, national interclub competitions, and other official events.
Los Trebejos has also hosted important stages of the national championship program. As a result, many of Uruguay’s strongest players have competed at its headquarters. The club’s tournament directors and arbiters provide structured events under current FIDE rules.
🌱 Chess Training and Community Activities
Chess education remains an important part of the club’s activities. Los Trebejos offers opportunities for children, adults, beginners, and established tournament players. Participants can attend lessons, practice games, and regular club sessions.
The organization also encourages junior participation. Young players can gain experience through internal events, open tournaments, team competitions, and national youth activities. Meanwhile, experienced members help maintain the club’s strong connection with the history of Uruguayan chess.
