♟️ About Club de Ajedrez Caissa de Guatemala

Club de Ajedrez Caissa de Guatemala is a non-profit chess organization based in Guatemala City. Its legal structure operates as Asociación Caissa Guatemala, ONG, while the club uses Club de Ajedrez Caissa de Guatemala as its public chess identity. The organization runs classical, rapid, blitz, school, online, and international chess events. In addition, it provides regular training for its members. The club began operating at the end of 2009. During 2010, its founders formalized it as a legal non-profit organization. A group of businesspeople, professionals, and chess enthusiasts created the association to develop competitive chess in Guatemala. Since then, the club has organized national and international tournaments with both local and FIDE rating. Today, the club reports almost 50 active members. Ricardo Sepe currently serves as President. The board also includes Vice President Marlow Jui, Secretary César Blanco, Treasurer Gerardo Bianchi, and several additional directors. Moreover, many board members contribute directly to tournament organization and other club activities.

🏆 International Tournaments and FIDE Competition

The International Chess Tournament Club Caissa Guatemala is the organization’s flagship competition. Club Caissa launched the series in 2019, followed by a second edition in 2020 and a third international tournament in January 2026. The Third International Tournament in 2026 brought a particularly strong field to Guatemala City. FIDE recorded 100 rated participants in its official report, while the broader tournament attracted players from numerous national federations. GM Brandon Jacobson won the event ahead of GM Lázaro Bruzón and GM Yuri González. Club Caissa continues the series with the Fourth International Chess Tournament Club Caissa Guatemala 2027 from January 6–10. The tournament takes place at Hotel Camino Real in Guatemala City and carries the endorsement of the Federación Nacional de Ajedrez de Guatemala. In addition, Club Rotario Guatemala “Las Américas” supports the event. The 2027 competition offers a $11,000 guaranteed prize fund and allows up to 155 players. Moreover, the organizer provides free entry for Grandmasters, Woman Grandmasters, International Masters, and Woman International Masters. César Blanco serves as Tournament Director and Technical Director.

⚡ Classical, Rapid and Blitz Tournament Program

Club Caissa maintains an extensive tournament calendar beyond its international open. The organization regularly runs competitions at classical, rapid, and blitz time controls, while many events attract players from outside the club. Its tournament history includes the Caissa Open, Fundadores, Rafael Lemus in Memoriam, R&R, seasonal rapid tournaments, team championships, and numerous blitz competitions. Furthermore, the club publishes a detailed historical archive of tournament winners extending across more than a decade. In 2026, the schedule included the Caissa Open, Fundadores, Rafael Lemus Memorial, R&R Trading Company tournament, rapid competitions, blitz events, and team chess. The club also created the Torneo Campeones de Caissa, which brings together players who qualify through designated club competitions. Consequently, members can compete regularly throughout the year instead of relying only on the annual international tournament.

🎓 Chess Training and Member Development

Player development forms an important part of Club Caissa’s membership program. Active members receive weekly chess instruction covering intermediate and advanced topics. In particular, the club has offered weekly group lessons with Grandmaster Yuri González. These sessions complement tournament participation and give members access to instruction from a titled international player. The club also encourages members to learn through frequent practical competition. Classical tournaments provide experience with longer calculation and preparation. Meanwhile, rapid and blitz competitions help players develop time management and practical decision-making. Moreover, Club Caissa maintains its own ranking of active members. This provides another way to follow competitive progress within the organization.

🧒 School Chess and Junior Development

Club Caissa also invests in younger players through the Grand Prix Escolar Individual Club Caissa de Guatemala. The 2026 series included separate U9, U12, U15, and U18 categories. The school Grand Prix gives children and teenagers access to structured tournament chess within their own age groups. In addition, the club publishes pairings and results through Chess-Results, which introduces young players to the same tournament environment used in larger federation competitions. Youth players also participate in the club’s general tournament calendar. Therefore, talented juniors can move from age-group competitions into open classical, rapid, and blitz events as their experience grows. The international tournament reinforces this development pathway. Its prize structure includes dedicated awards for players in several junior categories, from U8 through U18.

🤝 Chess Community and Partnerships

Club Caissa works with chess institutions, businesses, schools, and civic organizations to expand its activities. The Federación Nacional de Ajedrez de Guatemala endorses its major international tournament, while private sponsors support different competitions throughout the year. The organization has also partnered with public institutions on large chess events. For example, Club Caissa worked with Guatemala’s Ministry of Culture and Sports on the Torneo de Ajedrez Revolución 2025 at the Palacio Nacional de la Cultura. More than 300 players participated in that event. In addition, the club maintains online chess activities and public channels on Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, Chess.com, and its own website. These platforms allow players to follow tournaments, results, news, and upcoming events.
