♟️ About Club Atlético Sarmiento de Junín
Club Atlético Sarmiento de Junín is a historic multi-sport organization based in Junín, Buenos Aires Province, Argentina. Founded on April 1, 1911, the club is nationally known for professional football but also maintains an active chess section alongside basketball, hockey, tennis, volleyball, and other sports. Chess at Sarmiento combines tournament organization, competitive play, education, and community development. The club provides facilities and institutional support for local players, juniors, arbiters, and organizers. Moreover, it regularly cooperates with the Municipal Chess School “GM Diego Flores”, municipal authorities, educational organizations, and independent chess organizers. Ramiro Troilo is the current chess-section contact officially published by Club Atlético Sarmiento. He works as a chess teacher, arbiter, and tournament organizer. Meanwhile, Santiago Cazaux directs major chess events in Junín and leads the Municipal Chess School. Together, they form an important part of the city’s active chess infrastructure.🏆 Copa Ciudad de Junín and FIDE-Rated Tournaments
Club Atlético Sarmiento has a long association with the Copa Ciudad de Junín, one of the city’s principal chess competitions. In 2015, Sarmiento organized the first International Copa Ciudad de Junín together with the Municipal Chess School and NorChess. Santiago Cazaux served as Tournament Director, while Ramiro Troilo acted as Chief Arbiter. Nearly 50 players competed in the international event, including titled players from different parts of Argentina. The tournament tradition continues in 2026 with the IRT Copa Ciudad de Junín, scheduled for September 4–6. Chess-Results officially identifies Club Sarmiento de Junín as the organizer, Santiago Cazaux as Tournament Director, and Ramiro Troilo as Chief Arbiter. The competition forms part of the Circuito IRT Centro Bonaerense 2026, together with tournaments in Azul and Bolívar. Moreover, it offers seven rounds of classical chess rated for both national and international Elo.🎓 Chess Education and Youth Development
Chess education represents a major part of Sarmiento’s contribution to chess in Junín. The club works closely with the Escuela Municipal de Ajedrez “GM Diego Flores”, directed by Santiago Cazaux. Ramiro Troilo also works within the program as a teacher and arbiter. The school provides chess instruction for children, teenagers, and adults while extending activities into nearby communities and summer programs. The program achieved strong results during 2025. Dozens of Junín players competed at provincial level, while several young players became provincial champions. In addition, the school continued expanding workshops and grassroots activities designed to introduce new children to chess. This cooperation gives players a clear development path. Beginners can start with lessons and community workshops, while stronger competitors can progress toward provincial championships, national events, and FIDE-rated tournaments.🤝 Chess and the Junín Community
Sarmiento’s chess activities extend beyond traditional club tournaments. The organization cooperates with the Government of Junín, Universidad Nacional del Noroeste de la Provincia de Buenos Aires (UNNOBA), the Municipal Chess School, and local chess organizations on larger events. In 2025, for example, a major chess festival organized through this partnership included school tournaments, educational talks, FIDE-rated competition, and activities honoring local chess teacher Carlos Carozza. More than 350 children and young people participated in the wider festival program. The club also supports events designed to connect chess with education and social development. Lectures have addressed subjects such as chess and cognitive health as well as the social and educational benefits of the game. Therefore, Sarmiento’s chess section functions not only as a tournament organizer but also as part of a wider community chess network in Junín.♜ Competitive and Team Chess
Players representing Sarmiento participate in individual and team competitions at local, regional, and national level. The club has represented Junín in national interclub chess events. In 2020, for example, Sarmiento participated in a national online tournament organized within the Argentine chess structure for clubs associated with AFA. That team included several established Junín players, with Ramiro Troilo serving as captain. Furthermore, historical Copa Ciudad de Junín records show competitors representing CAS Junín in international-rated competition. Sarmiento also hosts internal and local tournaments. These competitions allow developing players to gain regular practical experience before moving into larger regional and FIDE-rated events.📜 History and Sporting Tradition
Club Atlético Sarmiento was founded on April 1, 1911, originally under the name Sarmiento Football Club. The organization later adopted its current Club Atlético Sarmiento name. Although football eventually became its most prominent sport, Sarmiento developed into a broader multi-sport institution. Today, the club operates extensive sporting facilities and supports several competitive disciplines. The chess section forms part of this wider sporting structure. Its partnership with local chess educators and organizers has enabled the club to host international tournaments, community festivals, internal competitions, and educational activities. Fernando Andrés Chiófalo currently serves as President of Club Atlético Sarmiento. Under the club’s broader institutional development, Sarmiento continues to strengthen its sporting facilities and support both professional and community-level activities. More than a century after its foundation, the organization therefore combines its national sporting profile with a meaningful role in the development of chess in Junín.
