♟️ About Club Ajedrez Oropesa del Mar

Club Ajedrez Oropesa del Mar is a chess club based in Oropesa del Mar (Orpesa), Castellón, Valencian Community, Spain. The club is affiliated with the Federación de Ajedrez de la Comunidad Valenciana (FACV) and maintains an active group of federated players. Its regular club base is the Casal Jove Oropesa, where the federation lists the organization officially. The club combines federated competition with local and open tournament organization. Its activities include classical FIDE-rated events, social competitions, rapid and blitz chess, and tournaments for children and adults. Moreover, the club works closely with the Ajuntament d’Oropesa del Mar and other local partners to bring chess into municipal celebrations and community activities. Its competitive membership includes adults, juniors, and developing players who represent Oropesa in Valencian chess. Antonio Abad Gramaje is the club’s principal current organizational contact and regularly serves as Tournament Director and arbiter. He directs the club’s flagship IRT Sub-2400 series and also manages registration through the club’s official email and telephone contact. The next major event is the V IRT Sub-2400 Oropesa del Mar, scheduled for September 4–6, 2026, at Hotel Servigroup Koral Beach.

♜ Federated and Club Chess

Club Ajedrez Oropesa del Mar maintains an active roster within the Valencian federation. The current FACV order of strength lists 24 registered players, demonstrating a substantial competitive base for a local coastal club. Players include experienced competitors as well as younger members who are building tournament experience. The club therefore provides an entry point into official chess for residents of Oropesa del Mar while also allowing established players to participate under the town’s name. Internal competition complements federation activity. For example, the club organized the II Torneo Social Club Ajedrez Oropesa from May to June 2025. Social tournaments create regular competitive activity between larger open events and help strengthen the club community.

🌱 Youth and Community Chess

The club places clear emphasis on making chess accessible to younger players. Its open tournaments regularly include dedicated prizes for categories such as U8, U10, U12, U14, U16, and U18. A good example is the Open Fiestas de Octubre de Oropesa, organized together with the Ajuntament d’Oropesa del Mar. The 2025 edition attracted 55 registered players across an Infantil tournament and an Absolute competition. The children’s event included separate U8, U10, and U12 categories, while the main tournament included U16, women’s, veteran, and local-player awards. The tournament forms part of the Circuit Escacs Azahar, connecting the club’s community program with a wider series of competitions in the Castellón area. In addition, previous editions have attracted players of many ages and strengths, reinforcing the club’s role in local chess development.

🏆 IRT Sub-2400 Oropesa del Mar

The IRT Sub-2400 Oropesa del Mar has become the club’s principal recurring classical tournament. The series reached its fourth edition in September 2025 and returns for a fifth edition in 2026. The V IRT Sub-2400 Oropesa del Mar will take place from September 4–6, 2026 at Hotel Servigroup Koral Beach. The tournament is open to players rated below 2400 FIDE and has a maximum capacity of 100 participants. Players will contest seven Swiss-system rounds at a classical time control of 60 minutes + 30 seconds per move. Results count for FIDE Standard rating. Antonio Abad Gramaje serves as Tournament Director, while Víctor Bellón Rocher is Chief Arbiter. The tournament offers cash and category prizes for the overall standings, women, veterans, rating groups, junior categories, and the best Club Ajedrez Oropesa player. In addition, the Ajuntament d’Oropesa del Mar and the Federación Valenciana de Ajedrez collaborate with the event, while several regional and private partners provide additional support.

🤝 Local Partnerships and Tournament Development

Club Ajedrez Oropesa del Mar has developed its tournament program through cooperation with local institutions and businesses. The Ajuntament d’Oropesa del Mar is a recurring partner in the club’s community and open competitions. The club has also worked with organizations such as the Diputació de Castelló, Generalitat Valenciana, Asociación de Hostelería Oropesa del Mar, and Hotel Servigroup Koral Beach. These partnerships help the organization stage larger events while keeping its activity closely connected with the municipality. As a result, the club now offers a combination of regular local chess and FIDE-rated competition. Its growing IRT series, social tournaments, and municipal events provide competitive opportunities throughout the year for both local members and visiting players.
