Círculo de Ajedrez Peones del Sur is a chess club and tournament organizer based in Puerto Madryn, Chubut, Argentina. Founded in 2009, the club has developed into one of the province’s most active chess organizations. It has approximately 100 active members, with children and young players representing a substantial part of its membership. Peones del Sur also conducts chess activities through local universities, primary schools, and secondary schools, emphasizing accessible chess education and participation across different ages and playing strengths. The club was one of the founding organizations of the Federación de Ajedrez Chubutense, established in 2010 to coordinate and promote organized chess throughout Chubut.

🏆 Tournaments and Competitive Chess

The club organizes a comprehensive program of over-the-board events, including classical, rapid, youth, category-based, and internationally rated competitions. Its principal event is the Abierto Internacional de Ajedrez Ciudad de Puerto Madryn, which attracts titled players and competitors from different parts of Argentina and abroad. Peones del Sur also conducts first-, second-, third-, and fourth-category championships, monthly rapid tournaments, summer competitions, and the annual Gran Prix Peones del Sur. These events provide a structured progression system through which developing players can gain experience and advance to higher competitive categories. The club’s teams have also achieved strong results in the Chubut Provincial Team Championship, winning three consecutive titles through 2025 and finishing second in the 2026 competition.

🌱 Chess Education and Community Development

Peones del Sur combines competitive chess with educational, cultural, and community initiatives. Its programs include classes for children, teenagers, adults, and senior players, along with inclusive chess activities and events designed to connect the club with schools and neighbourhood organizations. In October 2025, the club inaugurated its own chess premises in Puerto Madryn, creating a dedicated space for daily lessons, tournaments, workshops, and community meetings. The new venue strengthened the club’s ability to receive new students and expand its local activities. The organization also works with the Municipality of Puerto Madryn, educational institutions, the Federación de Ajedrez Chubutense, and other regional clubs to support the continued development of chess in Patagonia.
