♟️ About Club Deportivo CIAL

Club Deportivo CIAL (CD CIAL) is a chess club based in Lanzarote, Canary Islands, Spain, with its activities centered mainly in Arrecife and across the island. The club is affiliated with the Federación Canaria de Ajedrez and represents Lanzarote within the federation’s club structure. CIAL combines competitive team chess, youth development, chess education, and the organization of major open tournaments. The club has developed a particularly strong youth program. Its players compete in Lanzarote age-group championships, island leagues, rapid and blitz competitions, and qualification events for the Canary Islands championships. In addition, CIAL has participated in school-based chess programs and educational projects in cooperation with institutions on Lanzarote. At the international level, the club organizes its flagship summer tournament, currently known as the FIA International Chess Open, which attracts players from Spain and abroad. Cristina Escobar López serves as President of Club Deportivo CIAL and remains closely involved in its educational and tournament activities. In 2026, the club recorded strong results in Lanzarote’s youth championships, fielded several teams in the island team league, and organized the VI FIA 2026 Chess Open from July 29 to August 6, 2026. CIAL also co-organized the 2026 Canary Islands Active Chess Championship in Lanzarote in August.

🎓 Youth Chess and Development

Youth chess is one of CIAL’s most visible areas of activity. The club maintains a substantial group of young competitors who take part in official Lanzarote championships from the youngest categories through the junior levels. CIAL achieved particularly strong results during the 2026 Lanzarote age-group championships. Its players earned titles and podium places across the Under-12, Under-14, and Under-16 categories. Among them, Xiwei Chen won the overall Under-12 championship, while Yueyang Ma took the overall Under-14 title. The club continued its success in the Lanzarote Infantil Championship. Alicia María Pulido Buciuleac won the girls’ section, while Sergio Regulez Cabra won the boys’ competition. Several CIAL juniors consequently earned opportunities to represent Lanzarote at Canary Islands-level championships.

♜ Team Chess

CIAL also plays an important role in the Liga por Equipos de Lanzarote, the island’s organized team competition. In the 2026 Segunda division, the club entered multiple squads, including CD CIAL B and CD CIAL C. This depth allows both experienced competitors and developing players to gain regular classical team experience. CIAL players also participate in Lanzarote rapid and blitz events. At the 2026 Lanzarote Blitz Championship, for example, Junrong Li finished as the leading Under-16 player and Xiwei Chen won the Under-12 category.

🏫 Chess Education and Community Activity

The club has extended its work beyond traditional tournament competition through school chess initiatives. CIAL coaches have participated in the Ajedrez en el Aula program at educational institutions in Lanzarote. Cristina Escobar has been directly involved in these projects alongside other CIAL instructors. The program uses chess during lessons and school breaks to support concentration, logical thinking, social interaction, and participation. In 2026, Cristina Escobar also participated in an Erasmus+ educational exchange in Austria connected with the chess-in-school project. This reflected CIAL’s continuing involvement in educational chess as well as formal competition.

🌟 FIA International Chess Open

The club’s most important international tournament project is the FIA International Chess Open, a recurring summer event in Lanzarote. The VI FIA 2026 Chess Open took place from July 29 to August 6, 2026 at Hotel Fariones in Puerto del Carmen, Tías. The classical FIDE-rated competition used a nine-round Swiss system with a time control of 90 minutes plus 30 seconds per move. The 2026 edition offered substantial cash prizes, including €3,000 for first place, €2,000 for second, and €1,500 for third, together with several special-category prizes. Cristina Escobar López served as Tournament Director, while IA Pablo A. Arranz Martín was Chief Arbiter. CIAL has organized international chess events in Lanzarote for many years. Its earlier projects included the Open Internacional de Ajedrez Atlántico Oriental and subsequent editions of the Lanzarote international festival. Therefore, the FIA Open continues a long-running effort to bring international tournament chess to the island.

🏆 2026 Canary Islands Active Championship

CIAL was also involved in one of Lanzarote’s major regional events in August 2026. The club joined the Delegación de Ajedrez de Lanzarote and the Federación Canaria de Ajedrez in organizing the Canary Islands Active Chess Championship in Arrecife. The tournament attracted 64 players from several Canary Islands. International Master Alejandro Alvarado Díaz won the championship after finishing level on seven points with several other leading competitors. This event further underlined CIAL’s role not only as a competitive club, but also as an organizer capable of supporting significant regional and international competitions on Lanzarote.
