Chittenden County Chess Club is an active over-the-board chess club serving South Burlington, Burlington, and the wider Chittenden County area of Vermont. The club provides regular tournament-style chess, US Chess-rated games, casual blitz, and opportunities for players of different ages and strengths to compete throughout the year. The club has maintained an established presence in Vermont chess for many years. By 2014, Chittenden County Chess Club was already organizing public chess activity in Burlington, including a simultaneous exhibition jointly hosted with the Champlain College Chess Club. Its structured club program was also well established by 2017, when the association published its Thursday Knights newsletter, maintained a board and treasurer, and ran regular club Swiss tournaments. Walter M. Chesnut is the club’s principal current public contact and tournament organizer. The club publishes his direct phone number and email, while US Chess names him as organizer of the 2026 McGrath Memorial Vermont State Championship. In addition, Chesnut has played an important role in Vermont tournament chess beyond the club’s weekly program.

🏆 Weekly Rated Chess and Club Activity

Chittenden County Chess Club currently meets every Saturday morning at the South Burlington Public Library. The program starts with casual blitz from approximately 10:30 AM, followed by tournament-style games beginning at 11:00 AM. Players can take part in a US Chess-rated game when they hold an active US Chess membership. However, the club also accommodates non-rated tournament games for players who do not yet have federation membership. This structure gives members an unusual opportunity to play serious over-the-board chess almost every week. Moreover, the regular Swiss-style pairings allow developing players to gain practical tournament experience without waiting for a major weekend event. The club welcomes players of different ages and playing strengths. Therefore, its weekly program serves both experienced Vermont competitors and players who want to make the transition from casual chess into organized tournament play.

🌟 Vermont Open and State Championship

Chittenden County Chess Club has become closely connected with Vermont’s principal adult state championship. In 2022, Walter Chesnut served as Chief Tournament Director of the Vermont Open. The event awarded the Vermont State Champion title to the highest-scoring eligible Vermont resident. Meanwhile, the competition offered additional rating sections so that players below the championship level could participate in the same weekend. Chesnut then became the published organizer of the 2023 Vermont Open, which US Chess classified as both a Heritage Event and State Championship Event. He continued in the same organizer role for the 2024 edition. The championship structure generally combines an upper Championship section with rating-restricted sections. Consequently, the tournament can determine Vermont’s state champion while still providing meaningful competition for developing players. This long-running involvement makes Chittenden County Chess Club an important organizer within Vermont’s adult tournament scene rather than simply a weekly playing group.

🏛️ 2026 McGrath Memorial Vermont State Championship

Chittenden County Chess Club organizes the 2026 McGrath Memorial Vermont State Championship from November 13–15, 2026 at the University of Vermont’s Old Mill building in Burlington. US Chess names Walter M. Chesnut as the event organizer. More importantly, the official entry instructions require players paying by check to make payment directly to Chittenden County Chess Club. Therefore, the club is the strongest reusable organizer identity for MyChess.Events. The tournament uses a five-round Swiss system with a time control of G/90 + 30 seconds per move. Players compete in Championship, U1825, and U1425 sections. The published prize fund is $2,000 based on 50 paid entries, with $1,000 guaranteed. In addition, the highest-scoring eligible Vermont resident in the Championship section earns the Vermont State Champion title. The University of Vermont also plays an important hosting role. Eligible UVM students and staff receive free entry, while the tournament takes place in Old Mill Room 325 on the university campus. However, neither the University of Vermont nor a generic state-championship committee should replace Chittenden County Chess Club as the organizer. The club handles the tournament’s financial administration and Walter Chesnut handles its public communication.

🤝 Vermont Chess and University Partnerships

Chittenden County Chess Club also collaborates with other chess organizations in the Burlington area. In 2025, the club partnered with the University of Vermont Chess Club to offer Thursday-night rated chess on the UVM campus. The Thursday Thunder series used classical tournament time controls while welcoming players without US Chess membership to participate in separate unrated games. This cooperation complemented the club’s regular Saturday sessions rather than replacing them. As a result, Burlington-area players gained additional opportunities for serious over-the-board chess during the week. The club has also supported public chess activities outside its normal tournament schedule. In 2014, it joined the Champlain College Chess Club in hosting an exhibition with Vermont National Master David Carter. These partnerships reflect the club’s wider role in the local chess community. Chittenden County Chess Club connects library-based weekly chess, university activity, major weekend tournaments, and Vermont’s adult state championship structure.
