♟️ About Šachová univerzita QCC České Budějovice

Šachová univerzita QCC České Budějovice (Chess University QCC České Budějovice) is a chess education and tournament program based in České Budějovice, South Bohemia, Czech Republic. It developed from the Šachová škola QCC České Budějovice, which Jiří and Jana Havlíčkovi founded in 2009 with support from WGM Eliška Richtrová. The Chess University concept was introduced in 2015 within the wider QCC chess structure, expanding the original youth school into a broader program covering training, competitive teams, camps, rated tournaments, and international events. Youth development remains at the center of QCC’s work. The organization provides regular group and individual instruction, accompanies players to regional and Czech championships, operates youth teams alongside adult league teams, and organizes summer training camps. Its tournament calendar includes the FIDE Open QCC České Budějovice, QCC Cup, regional youth events, school competitions, and the flagship Chess Festival České Budějovice. QCC has also maintained cooperation with schools and the University of South Bohemia, reflecting its view of chess as both a competitive sport and an educational tool. Ing. Jiří Havlíček is the Head Coach of Chess University QCC and the principal operational contact. He organizes and directs QCC tournaments, manages the international České Budějovice festival, works with youth teams, and oversees much of the organization’s competitive program. Jana Havlíčková is also a professional trainer and tournament organizer. In 2026, QCC organized the FIDE Open in May and the Chess Festival from June 30 to July 8, followed by its summer training program. Its next major scheduled event is the QCC Cup 2026 on September 26, 2026.

📜 Development of the QCC Chess Program

The QCC chess school began in 2009 with approximately 60 students. By 2011, it had grown to around 100 pupils and had become one of the largest youth chess centers in the South Bohemian Region. The program soon began producing strong competitive results. QCC won Czech school-team championship titles in 2012 and 2013, while individual students achieved regional, Czech, and international results. A significant expansion followed in 2014, when QCC organized the first Chess Festival České Budějovice. One year later, the organization formally introduced the Šachová univerzita QCC České Budějovice concept and began cooperation with the University of South Bohemia.

🎓 Youth Chess and Training

QCC operates a structured training system for players at different stages of development. Jiří Havlíček serves as Head Coach and provides group and individual instruction, prepares players for tournaments, manages training camps, and accompanies juniors to major championships. Jana Havlíčková works primarily with developing and beginning players. She also coordinates cooperation with school groups and assists with tournaments and training camps. Competitive development extends into team chess. QCC players participate in adult league competitions as well as the Czech 1st Youth League and South Bohemian youth team competitions. This structure allows young players to gain experience against adults while continuing to compete within their own age categories.

🏆 FIDE Open QCC České Budějovice

The FIDE Open QCC České Budějovice is one of the organization’s principal annual classical tournaments. The 2026 edition took place from May 1–9, 2026 at Dům s pečovatelskou službou on Nerudova Street in České Budějovice. Players competed over nine Swiss-system rounds with a classical time control of 90 minutes for the first 40 moves, followed by 30 minutes to finish and a 30-second increment from move one. The tournament counted for both FIDE Elo and Czech national rating. Jana Havlíčková served as Tournament Director, while Jiří Havlíček was Chief Arbiter.

🌟 Chess Festival České Budějovice

The Chess Festival České Budějovice is QCC’s flagship international event. The festival has been organized since 2014 and has brought grandmasters, international masters, ambitious juniors, and club players to South Bohemia. The 2026 festival took place from June 30 to July 8 at the Clarion Congress Hotel České Budějovice. The original program called for closed GM and IM norm tournaments plus Open A and Open B. However, late withdrawals forced the organizers to cancel the planned IM tournament. The final festival therefore consisted of a closed GM tournament and two FIDE-rated Opens. GM Filip Haring of Slovakia won the closed GM tournament with 6.5/9, ahead of IM Ajay Santhosh Parvathareddy on tiebreak. In Open A, Czech IM Jan Vykouk scored an excellent 7.5/9 to take first place. The Opens used a nine-round Swiss format with a classical time control of 90 minutes for 40 moves plus 30 minutes and a 30-second increment. The festival also offered substantial prize money, title-norm opportunities, live online boards, and accommodation support for visiting players.

♜ Tournament and Community Activity

Beyond its two major classical events, QCC maintains a broad annual chess calendar. The organization supports regional competitions, school tournaments, youth team championships, individual events, and training camps. Its summer chess camps have been part of the program since the organization’s first year in 2009. They combine intensive chess preparation with a broader development program for young players. The calendar continues into autumn. As of September 1, the QCC Cup 2026 is scheduled for September 26, continuing another established QCC tournament series in České Budějovice.
