♟️ About Šahovski klub Brda Split

Šahovski klub Brda Split (Chess Club Brda) is a chess club and international tournament organizer based in Split, Croatia. Founded in November 2006, the club was established by a group of Split chess players led by its first President, Tihomir Bužančić. Brda quickly progressed through Croatia’s league system and later developed a wider role combining competitive team chess, junior development, chess education, and major FIDE-rated tournament organization. The club operates its own Chess School, where systematic work with children began in 2015. Its young players have progressed into Croatian junior and cadet team competitions, while leading juniors have also gained experience in senior chess. However, Brda is particularly visible internationally through two major recurring events: the Split Open – Chess Festival and the Šolta Open. Together, these tournaments bring players from numerous federations to Split and the nearby island of Šolta for classical, rapid, and blitz competition. FM Mateo Ivić is the club’s principal operational contact, coach, and Tournament Director for its major international events. He has worked with the club’s strongest juniors since 2019 and continues to direct both the Split Open and Šolta Open. In 2026, Brda organized the 9th Šolta Open from June 23–30 and the 15th Split Open from August 6–14. German GM Hagen Poetsch won the Šolta tournament, while Icelandic GM Vignir Vatnar Stefansson dominated the Split Open with 8.5/10.

📜 History and Development

Šahovski klub Brda entered official competition in 2007 and immediately won the southern group of Croatia’s fourth league. The club then climbed rapidly through the national structure. Brda won the third league in 2008, followed by the 2nd League South in 2009. It subsequently won its promotion group and reached the 1B League. After finishing fourth in 1B in 2010, Brda placed second the following season and earned promotion to the 1A League. This rapid progression established the new Split club as a serious competitive organization only a few years after its foundation. Over time, Brda expanded beyond team competition. Tournament organization and youth development became major parts of its identity, while its permanent club premises in Split provide a base for training and community chess.

🎓 Chess School and Youth Development

The Chess School of ŠK Brda is one of the club’s principal long-term projects. Structured junior training began in 2015 under Branko Šarić, who has remained involved as a coach. Experienced trainer and chess author Vladimir Cvetnić has also contributed to the program. Since 2019, Mateo Ivić has worked specifically with some of the club’s most talented young players. The program produced significant team results. Brda juniors progressed into Croatia’s top junior league, while its cadet teams reached national-level competition. Developing players have also been introduced into the club’s senior teams. A current example is FM Andrej Gal, one of the club’s strongest young players. At the 2026 Šolta Open, Gal scored 7/9 and finished second on tiebreak behind GM Hagen Poetsch, producing a strong performance against an international field.

🌟 Split Open – Chess Festival

The Split Open is the club’s flagship international tournament. The series began in 2011 and has attracted grandmasters, international masters, ambitious juniors, and club players from across Europe and beyond. The 15th Split Open – Chess Festival took place from August 6–14, 2026 at Hotel Zagreb in Split. Brda organized the event with support from the City of Split, Split-Dalmatia County, and regional and city tourism organizations. The main Open consisted of 10 classical Swiss rounds at 90 minutes plus 30 seconds per move. Separate FIDE-rated rapid and blitz tournaments formed part of the festival. The combined prize fund reached €15,000, including €12,000 allocated to the classical Open. GM Vignir Vatnar Stefansson of Iceland won the 2026 classical tournament convincingly with 8.5/10, a full point ahead of a large group of players on 7.5 points. FM Mateo Ivić served as Tournament Director, while IA Vladimir Cvetnić was Chief Arbiter. Previous Split Open winners include Croatian grandmasters Marin Bosiočić, Ante Brkić, Saša Martinović, Robert Zelčić, Mladen Palac, and international players such as Max Warmerdam and Eric Hansen.

🌊 Šolta Open

Brda launched its international tournament on the island of Šolta in 2017. It has since become the club’s second major summer event. The 9th Šolta Open was played from June 23–30, 2026 at the Cultural Center in Grohote. The nine-round FIDE-rated tournament used a classical 90+30 time control and offered €7,500 in cash prizes. An 11-round blitz tournament was also included in the program. Three players finished the classical tournament on 7/9. German GM Hagen Poetsch took first place on tiebreak, ahead of Brda junior FM Andrej Gal and Azerbaijani GM Zaur Mammadov. The tournament is organized in cooperation with local partners on Šolta, while Brda also coordinates accommodation assistance and transport for visiting participants.

🏛️ Tournament Organization and Community Chess

Tournament organization has become one of ŠK Brda’s defining strengths. Its summer calendar now combines two international classical Opens with rapid and blitz events, live boards, substantial prize funds, and players from many national federations. The club works with the City of Split, Split-Dalmatia County, local tourism organizations, the Municipality of Šolta, and other institutional partners. The 2026 Split Open also received support through the FIDE Open Aid Project. At the same time, Brda retains its local identity through its chess school, club activities, junior development, and permanent premises in Split. This combination connects grassroots chess in the city with substantial international tournament activity on the Croatian Adriatic coast.
