Chess Club Agria “ATHLOS” is the chess section of A.O. Agria Magnesias “ATHLOS” (Α.Ο. Αγριάς Μαγνησίας «ΑΘΛΟΣ»), based in Agria, near Volos in Magnesia, Greece. The chess section is widely known through its long-running “To Pionaki” platform. It organizes rated classical, rapid, school, and community competitions and is affiliated with the Greek Chess Federation. The club maintains an unusually active tournament program for the Magnesia region. Its calendar includes the international Agria Open, the long-running Rapid–ToPionaki series, local open tournaments, and regional scholastic championships. In 2026, its Rapid–ToPionaki circuit had already reached its 70th edition, with events registered for international rating. Antonios G. Soulikias is a central figure in the club’s current chess activity and is the most useful public contact for players and organizers. He regularly serves as arbiter and competition contact for ATHLOS events. The club’s principal international classical tournament in 2026 is the Agria Open 2026, held from August 25–30 at the Valis Resort in Agria.

🏆 Tournament Activity

Tournament organization is one of ATHLOS’ core activities. The club runs both regular local competitions and larger FIDE-rated events, providing opportunities across classical and rapid chess. The Rapid–ToPionaki series is particularly well established. The 66th Rapid–ToPionaki opened a five-event Grand Prix in March 2026, while the series reached its 70th tournament on June 28. The events are organized by A.O. Agria Magnesias “ATHLOS,” directed by the club board, and internationally rated. Antonios Soulikias served as arbiter for these 2026 competitions. ATHLOS also participates in the wider competitive structure of Thessaly and works with other chess organizations in the Volos and Magnesia area. This combination of frequent rapid events, scholastic chess, and international classical tournaments gives the club a broad regional role.

🎓 School and Youth Chess

School chess is another important part of the club’s program. In March 2026, ATHLOS worked with the Volos Chess Academy and Volos Chess Union to organize the Magnesia Individual and Team School Chess Championships at the General Lyceum of Agria. The team championship attracted 36 school teams across primary and secondary education. Later that month, ATHLOS organized the 2026 Thessaly Individual and Team School Chess Championships in cooperation with the Local Committee of Chess Clubs of Thessaly and with support from the Region of Thessaly and the General Lyceum of Agria. The competitions were open to students from across Thessaly. This sustained involvement in scholastic chess complements the club’s competitive tournament program and provides younger players with a route into organized chess.

🌍 Agria Open 2026

The Agria Open 2026 is the club’s main international classical event. A.O. Agria Magnesias “ATHLOS” organizes the tournament together with Chess Club “SACH” Thessaloniki, with regional support. The 2026 edition runs from August 25–30, 2026 at the five-star Valis Resort Hotel in Agria, Magnesia. The tournament consists of seven Swiss-system rounds and is divided into two rating groups. Open A is intended primarily for players rated 1800 and above, while Open B covers players up to 1799. Games are played at a time control of 90 minutes plus a 30-second increment per move, and results count for both national and international rating. The tournament continues the Agria Open program staged at the same venue in 2025 and strengthens ATHLOS’ international tournament presence alongside its extensive local and regional activity.

⚡ Rapid Chess

Rapid chess is an especially visible part of the ATHLOS calendar. The Rapid–ToPionaki events provide frequent FIDE-rated competition throughout the season rather than concentrating the club’s activity in a single annual event. By June 2026, the series had reached 70 editions, illustrating the continuity of the format. These tournaments are generally held in Agria and are managed directly by the ATHLOS board, with Antonios Soulikias regularly responsible for arbitration.
