♟️ Regional Identity
Charolais Brionnais Échec et Mat is a chess club rooted in the Charolais-Brionnais area and based in Paray-le-Monial, Burgundy-Franche-Comté, France. Founded in 2012, the association was created to give the territory a stable place to learn, play, and improve. Today, the club works from the Croix-Rouge premises on Boulevard Henri Régnier and is affiliated with the French Chess Federation under the Paray-le-Monial listing. For players, that means a real local structure instead of occasional casual meetups. The club combines training, supervised play, and official competition, while also keeping an accessible format for children, adults, and improving club players. In addition, its weekly rhythm makes regular over-the-board chess easier for families in the wider Charolais-Brionnais area. That local consistency is one of the club’s strongest assets for players who want a reliable place to grow.
🏆 Competitions and Events
Competition is a visible part of the club’s identity. CBEM fields an adult team in Nationale 4 and a youth team in the regional interclub division. It also runs its own rated events in Paray-le-Monial. The club organized the 1st Open de Paray-le-Monial in 2025 and the 2nd Open de Paray-le-Monial in 2026, both officially listed by the French Chess Federation. Earlier, it also hosted the Tournoi Rapide du Comité départemental in June 2023. That mix matters because the club does more than provide internal lessons. Instead, it offers a clear path from local practice to rated tournament chess and team competition. Meanwhile, its players also appear in regional and national events, which helps keep the competitive level visible inside the club. For local players, this creates a stronger chess environment with real goals, recurring events, and a practical route into formal competition.
🌱 Training and School Chess
CBEM also invests in training, youth development, and community outreach. The club offers three youth course levels on Saturday mornings, followed by supervised play, and it also runs adult classes on Monday evening, including in-person and online options. In addition, the federation listing shows a regular Wednesday free-play session. Lessons are led by Valentin Racle, a French Chess Federation-certified instructor, and the club welcomes children from age five. Beyond the club room, CBEM brings chess into schools and public life through school interventions, demonstrations, and local association events. That outreach gives children a first contact with organized chess and helps the club reach families across the area. As a result, the association supports both discovery and progression in the same structure. It serves beginners, recreational players, juniors, and more experienced competitors without losing its local and community-centered character.
