Cercle d’Échecs de Nyon (CEN) is a long-established chess club based in Nyon, Switzerland. Founded in 1916, the club has played an important role in the development of chess in the Nyon and Lake Geneva region for more than a century. It welcomes juniors, adults, beginners, recreational players, and experienced tournament competitors. The club combines competitive chess with education and community activities. Its program includes chess courses for children and adults, regular club evenings, internal competitions, team championships, tournaments, and opportunities for members to progress into national-level competition. The club’s main playing venue is Villa Niedermeyer at the Conservatoire de l’Ouest Vaudois, while additional training for children and adults takes place at the École des Tattes d’Oie. Cercle d’Échecs de Nyon also places strong emphasis on the social side of chess. Its traditional club evening takes place on Thursday, while training sessions are offered on several other days of the week. In addition, the club organizes public activities that bring chess beyond the tournament hall. 🏆 Competitive Chess and Achievements

Nyon has established itself as one of Switzerland’s strongest team chess clubs. Its first team won the Swiss Group Championship (Schweizerische Gruppenmeisterschaft / SGM) four consecutive times from 2022 through 2025. The 2025 championship was secured with a 5–3 victory over Winterthur in the decisive final round, completing an exceptional four-season winning streak. The club fields teams at different competitive levels and gives developing players opportunities to progress from training and regional competition to Switzerland’s national team leagues. Its combination of junior development and high-level competitive chess has made CEN an important part of the chess scene in the canton of Vaud.

🌍 Tournaments and Chess Activities

Cercle d’Échecs de Nyon organizes regular tournaments in addition to its league activities. These include classical tournaments, blitz competitions, youth events, internal championships, and community chess initiatives. The club’s Nyon tournament program continues actively into 2026 and 2027. The Swiss Chess Federation lists the Nyon Blitz and Nyon Tournament among the club’s official events, with Thierry Branca serving as the published tournament contact. Upcoming activities also include the Galactic Games in Nyon on November 15, 2026, followed by another Nyon tournament weekend in January 2027. Through these events, its chess school, team competitions, and community activities, Cercle d’Échecs de Nyon provides a pathway from learning the game to serious competitive chess while maintaining the welcoming club culture for which it is known.
