♟️ About Cercle de l’Échiquier de Martigny
Cercle de l’Échiquier de Martigny is an established chess club based in Martigny, in the Canton of Valais, Switzerland. The organization brings together children, teenagers, adult club players, experienced competitors, and local chess enthusiasts.
The club provides regular opportunities for training, friendly games, game analysis, internal tournaments, and official team competition. Members meet on Friday evenings at Café du Casino in central Martigny. Therefore, players can combine structured chess development with an active and welcoming club environment.
Cercle de l’Échiquier de Martigny participates in competitions organized within the Valais and Swiss chess systems. Its teams compete in the Valais Team Championship, while individual members represent the club in standard, rapid, blitz, and junior events. In 2026, the club’s first team won the Valais team title.
🎓 Youth Chess and Club Activities
Youth development forms a central part of the club’s work. Its chess school provides separate training groups for beginners, improving players, and advanced juniors.
The cadet program welcomes young players from approximately nine years of age. Beginners receive instruction adapted to their experience, while intermediate and promising players follow more demanding training. In addition, the promotion group prepares experienced juniors to progress toward the club’s advanced program.
The advanced group brings together the club’s strongest young players. Experienced adult competitors provide tactical and theoretical instruction, while the club cooperates with the Union Valaisanne des Échecs to make advanced training available to talented juniors from other Valais clubs.
The club also gives young players practical competition experience. Its juniors participate in the Grand Prix Valaisan Jeunes, regional championships, team events, and other official competitions. Moreover, the club organizes youth tournaments in cooperation with local municipalities and regional chess organizations.
Friday club evenings include blitz games, theoretical study, chess problems, analysis, and informal social activity. As a result, both competitive players and recreational members can take part according to their interests.
🏆 Tournaments and Competitive Chess
Tournament organization is one of the club’s principal activities. Cercle de l’Échiquier de Martigny organizes the annual Martigny Chess Tournament, formerly held as the Open de Martigny and now presented as an active-chess competition.
The event brings together titled players, experienced Swiss competitors, juniors, amateurs, and visiting international participants. It has become a regular part of the summer chess program in Valais.
The 34th Martigny Chess Tournament 2026 takes place on August 8 at Salle communale de Martigny. The competition uses a seven-round Swiss system with a rapid time control of 20 minutes plus five seconds per move.
The tournament counts for FIDE rapid rating, the Grand Prix Valaisan Jeunes, and the Valais Rapid Chess Championship. It also offers general prizes and additional awards for women, seniors, juniors, Valais players, cadets, and several rating categories.
Through its chess school, team participation, weekly meetings, youth events, and annual rapid tournament, Cercle de l’Échiquier de Martigny supports chess development throughout Martigny and the wider Valais region.
