♟️ About Centro Insular de Ajedrez de La Palma
The Centro Insular de Ajedrez de La Palma is an island-wide chess organization based in Santa Cruz de La Palma, Canary Islands, Spain. It coordinates and supports chess activity across La Palma through tournaments, youth events, club cooperation, training initiatives, and major international competitions. The organization works closely with the Federación Canaria de Ajedrez, the Cabildo de La Palma, island municipalities, and local chess clubs, helping connect grassroots activity with regional and FIDE-rated competition. The Centro supports a network of active clubs across La Palma, including clubs in Santa Cruz de La Palma, Breña Alta, Los Llanos de Aridane, Villa de Mazo, and Breña Baja. Its activities range from children’s tournaments and the Liga Insular de Clubes to rapid, blitz, and classical competitions. Moreover, it organizes major events such as Breña Baja Mágica and the international Jugando con las Estrellas – Torneo Internacional de Ajedrez Isla de La Palma. The Ajedrez La Palma platform also serves as an information hub for tournaments, results, clubs, and chess news across the island. José Carlos Martín Rodríguez remains the principal operational figure and tournament contact for the Centro. He also serves as President of the Federación Canaria de Ajedrez and directed major La Palma tournaments in 2026 alongside IM Diego del Rey. The organization had an especially active 2026 season, beginning with the Torneo Internacional Breña Baja Mágica in January and culminating in the IX Torneo Internacional de Ajedrez Isla de La Palma – Jugando con las Estrellas, held from August 7–14, 2026.🏛️ Island Chess Organization
The Centro Insular works across municipal boundaries rather than functioning as a conventional single-city chess club. Its role includes tournament organization, logistical support, cooperation with individual clubs, and promotion of chess throughout La Palma. The current Ajedrez La Palma network lists Club Ajedrez Santa Cruz de La Palma, Club de Ajedrez Baltajaque, Club de Ajedrez Isla Bonita, Club de Ajedrez Roque Niquiomo, and Club de Ajedrez Breñadrez among the island’s active clubs. The Liga Insular de Clubes provides regular team competition, while individual tournaments and regional championships create additional opportunities for players to progress within the Canary Islands chess system.🎓 Youth and Community Chess
Youth development remains an important part of chess activity supported by the Centro. In June 2026, it worked with Club Baltajaque on the II Chess Kids Grupo Demaria in Breña Alta. Nearly 50 players under the age of 14 participated. Airam Peraza produced a perfect six victories from six games to win the event, while local juniors filled several of the leading positions. The Centro also supports public chess activities designed to reach audiences beyond established club players. Consequently, its events frequently combine formal competition with exhibitions, simultaneous displays, and activities in public spaces.🌟 Torneo Internacional Isla de La Palma – Jugando con las Estrellas
The Centro’s flagship event is the Torneo Internacional de Ajedrez Isla de La Palma – Jugando con las Estrellas. After editions dating back to 2016, the festival reached its ninth edition in 2026. The main tournament took place from August 7–14, 2026 at the Pabellón Deportivo Roberto Estrello in Santa Cruz de La Palma. It used a 10-round Swiss system with a classical time control of 90 minutes plus 30 seconds per move and was rated for international FIDE Elo. The final field contained 147 players and included a substantial group of titled international competitors. GM S. P. Sethuraman of India won the tournament with 8/10, finishing level with GM Eduardo Iturrizaga and taking first place on Buchholz tiebreak. GM Jorge Roberto Elías Reyes finished third. The 2026 tournament offered approximately €15,000 in prizes, including awards for women, juniors, veterans, rating categories, Canary Islands players, La Palma players, and participating clubs.⚡ Festival and Parallel Events
The 2026 festival extended well beyond the ten rounds of classical chess. A major attraction was the visit of Rey Enigma, who staged public chess activities in Los Llanos de Aridane and Breña Alta. The program also included the II Torneo Internacional Blitz Ciudad de Santa Cruz de La Palma on August 12 and the traditional XXVIII Guanche de Plata in Breña Alta on August 15–16, 2026. Earlier in the year, the Centro and Federación Canaria de Ajedrez organized the Torneo Internacional de Ajedrez Breña Baja Mágica, held from January 2–7, 2026 in Los Cancajos. The nine-round event was FIDE-rated, offered opportunities for international norms, and carried a prize fund of €8,610.🤝 Institutional Cooperation
Major chess activity on La Palma is supported through cooperation between the Centro and public institutions. Partners in 2026 included the Cabildo de La Palma, SODEPAL, Gobierno de Canarias, Ayuntamiento de Santa Cruz de La Palma, other island municipalities, and the Federación Canaria de Ajedrez. This model allows the Centro to stage competitions in several municipalities while connecting chess with tourism, education, and community activity. As a result, international tournaments coexist with youth development and local club competition throughout the island.
