♟️ About Federación Canaria de Ajedrez

The Federación Canaria de Ajedrez (FCA) is the regional governing body for chess throughout the Canary Islands, Spain. It regulates and coordinates official chess activity across the archipelago and is integrated into the Federación Española de Ajedrez. Its structure connects the island federations and delegations of Gran Canaria, Tenerife, La Palma, Lanzarote, and Fuerteventura, while also supporting chess activity on the remaining islands. The federation organizes and supervises the principal Canary Islands championships for adults, women, juniors, veterans, youth categories, and club teams. In addition, it coordinates licensing, arbiters, coaches, technical development, regional selections, and participation in Spanish championships. The FCA also supports international tournaments and the Circuito Canario de Ajedrez Activo, working with island organizations, clubs, municipalities, cabildos, and the Government of the Canary Islands. José Carlos Martín Rodríguez is the current President of the Federación Canaria de Ajedrez. The current government structure also includes Miguel Ángel Mayor Déniz as Vice President and María Mar Castro Pena as Secretary. The federation maintains an extensive competition and development program in 2026, while it is currently co-organizing the VII Torneo Internacional de Ajedrez San Cristóbal de La Laguna, which runs through August 30, 2026 in Tenerife.

🏛️ Organization and Regional Structure

The Federación Canaria de Ajedrez operates as the coordinating body for organized chess across a geographically dispersed archipelago. Consequently, much of its work depends on cooperation with island federations, island delegations, local chess clubs, and public institutions. Gran Canaria and Tenerife have their own insular federations. Meanwhile, the FCA works through island delegations in La Palma, Lanzarote, and Fuerteventura. Representatives of clubs, players, coaches, and arbiters also participate in the federation’s General Assembly. The federation’s responsibilities include organizing or supervising official regional competitions, promoting chess throughout the Canary Islands, coordinating regional participation in national events, and supporting the development of high-performance players. Moreover, specialist structures cover arbiters, monitors, coaches, and other technical areas of organized chess.

🏆 Championships of the Canary Islands

The FCA maintains a comprehensive championship structure covering different ages and forms of competition. During 2026, the regional calendar has included championships for U8, U10, U12, U14, U16, junior, veteran, absolute, women, and club teams. Different islands host these competitions, which helps distribute major chess activity throughout the archipelago. The Campeonato de Canarias por Equipos 2026 brought leading clubs from the islands together for classical team competition. Teams compete over four boards with a standard time control of 90 minutes + 30 seconds per move, and the champion earns the right to participate in the corresponding Spanish national team championship under FEDA regulations. The federation also coordinates rapid and blitz activity. Its Circuito Canario de Ajedrez Activo brings together tournaments organized by clubs and local partners across different islands. The FCA homologates and coordinates the events, creating a season-long competitive structure for rapid chess.

🎓 Youth Chess, Training and Technical Development

Youth development is one of the federation’s principal responsibilities. Regional championships provide a structured pathway from the youngest U8 and U10 categories through U12, U14, U16, and junior competition. Successful young players can then represent the Canary Islands at Spanish championships. In addition, the federation helps coordinate travel, accommodation, and sporting arrangements for selected competitors when provided for under championship regulations. The FCA also develops training initiatives for coaches and players. In 2026, its program included a dedicated session on sports psychology applied to chess, designed to give monitors and coaches practical tools for concentration, emotional management, confidence, and tournament preparation. Furthermore, the federation publishes a technical-development calendar and cooperates with clubs on higher-level training programs. These initiatives complement tournament activity by strengthening coaching standards and long-term player development throughout the islands.

🌍 International Tournament Activity

The Federación Canaria de Ajedrez regularly works with clubs, municipalities, and island organizations to stage international competitions. At the beginning of 2026, the federation and Centro Insular de Ajedrez de La Palma organized the Torneo Internacional de Ajedrez Breña Baja Mágica 2026. The nine-round classical tournament ran from January 2–7 and was valid for FIDE rating and international title norms. The FCA is also currently co-organizing the VII Torneo Internacional de Ajedrez San Cristóbal de La Laguna 2026 with the Organismo Autónomo de Deportes de San Cristóbal de La Laguna. The festival takes place from August 21–30, 2026 at the former Convent of Santo Domingo in La Laguna. Its principal classical Open runs over nine rounds at 90+30 and offers opportunities for international title norms. The wider festival also includes an international nocturnal blitz competition and an international rapid tournament. Approximately €10,500 in prizes has been announced across the main event. These competitions illustrate the federation’s role beyond regional championships. By cooperating with local organizers, the FCA helps connect Canary Islands chess with the wider Spanish and international tournament circuit.
