♟️ About Calvià Chess Festival

Calvià Chess Festival is a long-running international chess festival held in Calvià, Mallorca, Balearic Islands, Spain. It is a tournament project rather than a conventional chess club. The festival began in 2004, the same year Calvià hosted the 36th Chess Olympiad, and it was originally developed as part of the municipality’s wider chess program. Since then, it has maintained a strong connection with the Ajuntament de Calvià, local chess organizations, and the promotion of chess-related sports tourism in Mallorca. The festival’s principal competition is the Calvià Amateur Open, a FIDE-rated classical tournament designed primarily for amateur players. Over the years, the wider festival program has also included blitz tournaments, junior competitions, simultaneous exhibitions, masterclasses, problem-solving activities, and other chess events. Moreover, Calvià has attracted players from many countries, combining serious international competition with an evening playing schedule that allows participants to spend much of the day exploring Mallorca. IM Sergio Estremera Paños is the current Tournament Director and principal organizational contact for the festival. Estremera, a former Spanish Champion and experienced International Organizer, has been closely associated with the event for many years. The next edition, the XXIII Calvia Amateur Open, is scheduled for October 10–18, 2026 at Sala Palmanova and will continue the festival’s established nine-round FIDE-rated format.

📜 History and Development

The origins of Calvià Chess Festival are directly connected with the 2004 Chess Olympiad, which brought international chess attention to Calvià. The first festival took place alongside the Olympiad and featured a much broader competitive program than the current amateur-focused format. It included international opens, amateur tournaments, rapid chess, junior events, and the Spanish Veterans Championship. The festival continued annually after the Olympiad. From 2008 onward, the International Amateur Open became its principal competition, creating a format aimed at strong amateur players rather than elite Grandmaster fields. This model proved sustainable. By the seventh festival in 2010, the various activities attracted more than 200 participants from 18 countries. In 2019, the main Amateur Open alone reached a then-record 142 players representing 24 countries. Municipal organizations have consistently treated the festival as both a chess event and a sports-tourism initiative. Holding the tournament in October helps extend Calvià’s visitor season, while the evening schedule allows international players and accompanying family members to combine chess with a stay in Mallorca.

🌍 International Amateur Chess

The Calvià Amateur Open has developed a particularly international participant base. Players from across Europe and other regions return to Mallorca for a tournament that combines classical FIDE-rated chess with an accessible eligibility structure. The event traditionally welcomes experienced club players, juniors, veterans, Candidate Masters, FIDE Masters, and other titled players who meet the published rating and title restrictions. Consequently, the competition offers strong opposition without becoming an unrestricted elite open. The XXII Calvia Amateur Open 2025 took place from October 4–12. FM Daniel Martin Rueda won the tournament with 7.5 points from nine rounds, finishing ahead of German player Michael Tscharotschkin on tiebreak. The field again included players from numerous European federations. The festival’s long-term international participation has helped establish a recognizable identity built around competitive amateur chess, Mallorca, and an annual October tournament schedule.

Although the Amateur Open remains the centerpiece, Calvià Chess Festival has historically offered more than one tournament. Different editions have included blitz competitions, junior tournaments, chess camps, simultaneous exhibitions, training sessions, masterclasses, and chess problem contests. The festival has hosted notable chess personalities during its history. Moreover, organizers connected with the wider Mallorca chess-event structure have arranged exhibitions and activities involving leading players. A particularly notable example was a simultaneous exhibition with Magnus Carlsen in Mallorca in 2011, when he was the world’s highest-rated player. Calvià has also maintained close links with organized chess in the Balearic Islands. Previous festival programs have included Balearic youth team championships and cooperation with the Federació Balear d’Escacs. This mixture of classical competition and supplementary activities reflects the festival’s original concept: making chess accessible to players of different ages and levels while creating a broader social event around the main tournament.

🏆 XXIII Calvia Amateur Open 2026

The XXIII Calvia Amateur Open is scheduled from October 10–18, 2026 at Sala Palmanova in Palmanova, Calvià. Players will contest nine Swiss-system rounds. The classical time control is 90 minutes for the first 40 moves, followed by 15 minutes for the remainder of the game, with a 30-second increment from move one. Results count for both FIDE and national rating. The 2026 regulations permit players with a FIDE rating below 2350 on the October 1, 2026 rating list, provided they do not hold the IM or GM title. The tournament has a maximum capacity of 160 players. Most rounds begin at 8:00 PM, maintaining the festival’s characteristic evening schedule. Round eight starts at 3:30 PM, while the ninth and final round begins at 10:00 AM on October 18, followed by the closing ceremony and prize presentation. IO Sergio Estremera Paños serves as Organizer and Tournament Director. The current Chess-Results entry also lists IA Pablo Arranz Martín as Chief Arbiter, FA Juan Martín Mascaró as Deputy Chief Arbiter, and Germán Maldonado Mena as part of the arbiting team.
