Calais Passion Echecs is a French chess club based in Calais, Pas-de-Calais, in the Hauts-de-France region. Founded in 2008, the association promotes competitive, recreational, and youth chess in Calais and the surrounding area. The club is affiliated with the Fédération Française des Échecs under club code R62071 and operates from the Stade du Souvenir inside the historic Citadelle de Calais. The organization provides regular over-the-board chess for adults and young players. Its weekly schedule includes Wednesday evening sessions, dedicated Saturday morning activity for players under 14, and additional Saturday afternoon club sessions. 📜 History and Development

Calais Passion Echecs was officially created on May 13, 2008 as a French nonprofit association. Its declared purpose is to promote and develop the sporting practice of chess, both within its own playing venue and through activities elsewhere. The association was originally registered at 27 Rue Jean-Baptiste Corot in Calais. As the organization developed, it established a more permanent chess base within the Citadelle de Calais. In 2021, its registered headquarters moved to the Anciennes Écuries at Stade du Souvenir on Avenue Pierre de Coubertin. This location now serves both as the official base of the organization and its regular playing venue. From this permanent base, the club has continued to expand its competitive and youth activities. More recently, the creation of the Open International de Calais has added a significant international tournament project to its regular club program.

🏆 Open International de Calais

The Open International de Calais is the club's flagship classical tournament. Calais Passion Echecs launched the event in 2025, when the first edition took place from October 25–30 in the Grand Salon of the Hôtel de Ville de Calais. The tournament introduced a six-day, nine-round FIDE-rated classical competition to the city. It uses an accelerated Swiss pairing system and a time control of 90 minutes plus a 30-second increment per move. Following the inaugural event, the club confirmed the 2nd Open International de Calais for October 24–29, 2026. The second edition again takes place in the Grand Salon of Calais City Hall. Pierre Warnault serves as the organizer and President of the organizing committee, while Philippe Blot is the chief arbiter. The 2026 edition offers a significantly strengthened prize structure, including a €1,000 first prize, €700 for second place, and €400 for third. Additional prizes are available for women, rating groups, and age categories. The tournament welcomes players affiliated with the Fédération Française des Échecs or another FIDE member federation and requires participants to hold a FIDE ID.

♜ Team Chess

Calais Passion Echecs participates actively in the French Interclubs structure. The club's leading adult team currently competes in Nationale 3, giving members access to national-level team competition. The organization also fields a youth team in Division Régionale. This provides younger members with a pathway from weekly training and club activity into structured competitive chess. Team chess complements the club's individual tournament activity and helps players gain regular experience throughout the season.

🎓 Youth Chess and Development

Youth chess forms an established part of the weekly Calais Passion Echecs program. The club runs a dedicated Saturday morning session for players under 14. This gives younger members a separate environment in which to learn, practice, and develop before moving toward more advanced competitive activity. Young players can subsequently take part in regional youth team competition and other official FFE events. The club's schedule therefore provides a progression from introductory chess and supervised practice toward tournament and team experience.

🤝 Local and Departmental Chess

Calais Passion Echecs also contributes to the wider chess structure of Pas-de-Calais. Its Stade du Souvenir venue is used not only for regular club activity but also for official departmental competitions. In February 2026, for example, the club hosted a CDJE 62 classical competition for licensed players from Pas-de-Calais. Pierre Warnault served as the public contact for the event. This role connects the club's local membership with the broader departmental chess network and gives players additional opportunities to compete without leaving Calais.

🌍 Chess in Calais

The club's expansion of tournament activity has strengthened Calais as a chess destination in northern France. The Open International de Calais is organized in partnership with the City of Calais, with the city's Grand Salon providing a distinctive setting for the main international tournament. Meanwhile, normal club activity remains centered at Stade du Souvenir in the Citadelle de Calais. This combination allows Calais Passion Echecs to maintain a stable local chess program while also organizing an international event in one of the city's principal civic venues.

🏛️ Organization and Governance

Pierre Warnault is the current President of Calais Passion Echecs. He is also the club's principal operational public contact and leads the organization of the Open International de Calais as President of its organizing committee. The Fédération Française des Échecs separately identifies Emmanuel Glangetas as the club's administrative contact. However, current club and tournament communications consistently direct public enquiries, registrations, and organizational questions to Pierre Warnault.
