♟️ About Budapest ONE WEEK

Budapest ONE WEEK is an international chess tournament organization based in Budapest, Hungary, specializing in compact FIDE-rated classical events for players pursuing Grandmaster and International Master norms, international rating points, and high-level competitive experience. The organization’s principal project is the recurring Budapest ONE WEEK tournament series. Rather than staging only one major festival each year, ONE WEEK organizes multiple editions throughout the season. This gives ambitious players repeated opportunities to compete in carefully constructed international fields without waiting for a single annual norm tournament. The standard programme combines GM, IM, and U2250 Rating tournaments. The strongest groups are normally organized as ten-player round robins, while the U2250 competition provides an additional pathway for players focused primarily on FIDE rating development. IO Zsolt Korpics is the Founder and Tournament Director of Budapest ONE WEEK. He manages tournament composition, applications, titled-player participation, scheduling, practical information, and communication with international competitors.

🎯 A Tournament Series Built Around Title Norms

Budapest ONE WEEK is specifically structured around the needs of players pursuing international titles. In an ordinary Swiss-system Open, a player cannot know in advance whether the required combination of titled opponents, federation representation, ratings, and other FIDE norm conditions will be achieved. ONE WEEK addresses this problem by assembling dedicated GM and IM groups before the competition begins. The GM tournaments bring together Grandmasters and strong International Masters or FIDE Masters who are pursuing GM norms. The IM tournaments follow a similar model for players seeking International Master norms. Tournament composition therefore plays a central role in the organization’s work. Ratings, titles, national federations, and competitive objectives are considered when players are assigned to groups. Norm opportunities are never guaranteed because the final performance still depends on the player’s results and all applicable FIDE requirements. Nevertheless, the tournament structure is deliberately created to provide the conditions in which eligible norm performances can be achieved.

🏆 GM & IM Round-Robin Tournaments

The established Budapest ONE WEEK format uses nine-round classical competitions, normally with ten players in each GM or IM group. Every participant meets every other player once. This round-robin structure gives competitors a known field of opponents and allows them to prepare specifically for each game. The standard time control is 90 minutes for the entire game plus a 30-second increment from move one. Games are submitted for FIDE Standard rating. Several groups can be organized simultaneously when demand is strong. For example, the October 2026 edition developed into a substantial programme containing two GM groups, two IM groups, and a U2250 tournament. This ability to operate several parallel title groups demonstrates how the series has grown beyond a small invitational tournament. It can now accommodate players with different ratings and title objectives within the same tournament week.

📈 U2250 Rating Tournament

Budapest ONE WEEK also provides a dedicated U2250 Rating tournament for players who are not yet ready for the GM or IM groups but want serious international classical competition. The section is primarily designed for players rated approximately 1800–2250 FIDE. Limited participation for lower-rated players may also be possible after consultation with the Tournament Director. The U2250 group normally follows the same compact nine-game concept as the title tournaments. However, when registrations exceed the capacity of a single round robin, the organizer may convert the section into a Swiss-system event. This provides an important development pathway. Players can first use the Rating tournament to strengthen their FIDE rating and gain international experience before progressing toward IM and eventually GM norm events. The U2250 competition has also traditionally offered a cash prize fund, giving developing players an additional competitive incentive.

⏱️ The ONE WEEK Format

The defining feature of Budapest ONE WEEK is contained in its name: players can complete a substantial international classical tournament within approximately one week. Nine rated games are normally concentrated into six or seven calendar days. The schedule therefore uses several double-round days, combining morning and afternoon games. This model is particularly useful for international competitors. Traditional round-robin norm tournaments can require ten days or longer, increasing hotel, food, and travel costs. ONE WEEK compresses the competitive programme while retaining nine classical games. The format also makes it easier for players to combine a Budapest tournament with work, studies, training schedules, or other European competitions. Despite the compact timetable, games use a full classical time control. Therefore, the tournament remains suitable for FIDE title norms and serious rating development rather than becoming a rapid-format event.

🌍 International Participation

International participation is essential to the ONE WEEK concept. GM and IM norm tournaments require appropriate representation from different national federations, and the series regularly attracts players from outside Hungary. Tournament fields have included competitors representing countries across Europe, Asia, North America, and other regions. For example, the October 2026 GM-B field included players from Hungary, India, Ukraine, Greece, Poland, Belarus, England, and Bulgaria. The group contained Grandmasters, International Masters, and FIDE Masters within the same ten-player round robin. This international composition benefits both norm candidates and established titled players. Younger competitors receive experience against unfamiliar international opposition, while professional players gain additional opportunities to compete in Budapest throughout the year.

⭐ International Norm Successes

Budapest ONE WEEK has already produced significant title-norm performances for players from several countries. One notable example came in August 2025, when American WGM Tatev Abrahamyan produced what she described as the best tournament of her career. She scored 7/9 without losing a game, crossed the 2400 rating threshold, completed the requirements for the International Master title, and earned her first Grandmaster norm. The same tournament was also important for Hungarian WGM Zsoka Gaal, who secured her final International Master norm. The series continued producing norms in 2026. Indian youngster Aadik Theophane Lenin, aged only 14, scored 5.5/9 without a defeat in the Budapest ONE WEEK August GM-A round robin and earned his second IM norm. During the same August tournament period, Indian FIDE Master Harshit Ranjan Sahu scored seven points from nine games in the IM-B tournament. He finished runner-up while remaining unbeaten and secured his third and final IM norm. These performances demonstrate the practical role of Budapest ONE WEEK in international player development. The series does not merely advertise theoretical norm possibilities; players have successfully used its tournaments to complete major steps toward IM and GM titles.

📜 Development of the Series

Budapest ONE WEEK has developed into a recurring part of the Hungarian international tournament calendar. Documented editions were already being played in 2024. The February 2024 programme included a GM tournament and multiple IM groups. IM Aron Pasti won the GM competition with 7/9, while Thibault Dudognon won one of the IM tournaments with 7.5/9. The series continued expanding through 2025. FIDE documentation records a Budapest ONE WEEK GM round robin in March 2025, while another major edition followed in August. By 2026, the tournament schedule had become particularly active. Editions were held in January, March, August, and October, while some tournament periods contained several GM and IM groups simultaneously. This recurring model is important to the organization’s identity. Budapest ONE WEEK is not simply the name of an individual tournament. It represents an ongoing programme designed to provide repeated international norm and rating opportunities in Budapest.

🏛️ Hungarian Chess Federation Tournament Hall

Budapest ONE WEEK tournaments are regularly played at the Hungarian Chess Federation Tournament Hall, located at Falk Miksa utca 10, 1055 Budapest. The venue is in central Pest, close to the Hungarian Parliament Building and the Danube. Its location gives international participants convenient access to hotels, apartments, restaurants, cafés, and public transportation. Using an established national-federation chess venue also provides appropriate infrastructure for serious FIDE-rated competition. The tournament programme can accommodate several parallel groups while maintaining professional playing conditions and arbiter supervision. The central Budapest location is particularly valuable for international players. Participants arriving by air or railway can stay in the city centre and reach the playing venue without needing accommodation at a remote tournament resort.

🇭🇺 Budapest as a Norm-Tournament Destination

Budapest has a long-standing international reputation as a destination for chess players pursuing title norms. For decades, the Hungarian capital has hosted recurring round-robin tournaments that bring together local titled players and ambitious competitors from abroad. This creates an environment in which international norm events can be organized regularly rather than only during large annual festivals. Budapest ONE WEEK continues this tradition with a particularly compact model. The organization combines Budapest’s large pool of experienced titled players with international applicants who travel specifically for rating and norm opportunities. This ecosystem also makes it possible to organize multiple groups according to player demand. Strong international visitors can therefore compete against Hungarian Grandmasters and International Masters while also meeting opponents from several other federations.

📅 2026 Tournament Activity

The January 2026 Budapest ONE WEEK took place from January 19–24 at the Hungarian Chess Federation. The programme contained GM, IM, and U2250 competition, with several separate title groups ultimately appearing in the published results. A further edition followed from March 11–17, 2026, again using GM, IM, and rating groups. The series returned in August 2026, producing several notable title performances. Harshit Ranjan Sahu completed his third IM norm, while Aadik Theophane Lenin earned his second. The October 12–17, 2026 edition demonstrated the continuing growth of the programme. Published tournament records show two GM groups, two IM groups, and a U2250 event running during the same tournament period. The GM-B group alone featured ten international competitors with an average rating above 2400. The field included several Grandmasters, International Masters, and FIDE Masters representing numerous federations.

🌟 Budapest ONE WEEK January 2027

The series continues in 2027 with Budapest ONE WEEK January 2027 – GM, IM & U2250, scheduled for January 18–23, 2027. The event again follows the organization’s established six-day concept, with GM and IM norm opportunities alongside a U2250 rating group. The traditional playing venue is the Hungarian Chess Federation Tournament Hall. Final group composition, tournament fees, detailed playing times, and other arrangements are confirmed directly by the Tournament Director. The January edition provides another opportunity for international competitors to begin the new tournament year with nine FIDE-rated classical games in Budapest. Its continuation also shows that ONE WEEK has become a recurring tournament programme rather than a temporary series of individual events.

👤 IO Zsolt Korpics

IO Zsolt Korpics is the Founder and Tournament Director of Budapest ONE WEEK. The official ONE WEEK website describes him as a chess organizer and FIDE Master. He also holds the International Organizer (IO) title and has extensive experience coordinating FIDE-rated tournaments in Hungary. His responsibilities within ONE WEEK include receiving player applications, assembling GM and IM groups, communicating with titled players, coordinating tournament schedules, answering practical questions, and assisting international participants with accommodation information. Korpics is also active elsewhere in Hungarian tournament chess. His organizational experience includes other international events and cooperation with established Hungarian chess institutions. For ONE WEEK participants, however, he remains the principal point of contact from the initial application through the final tournament arrangements.

🌱 Role in International Player Development

Budapest ONE WEEK occupies a specialized position within competitive chess. Its target audience is primarily players who have already reached a serious tournament level and need access to suitable international opposition to continue progressing. For these players, simply playing more games is often insufficient. They need tournaments with the right combination of ratings, titles, national federations, and playing conditions. ONE WEEK builds competitions around these requirements. At the same time, the U2250 programme gives developing players a route into this environment before they are ready to pursue an international title norm. The resulting structure creates a progression from FIDE rating development to IM norms and ultimately GM norms. Combined with several editions during the year, this makes Budapest ONE WEEK a practical destination for players planning a concentrated programme of international classical chess.
