♟️ About Bodø Sjakklag
Bodø Sjakklag is a chess club based in Bodø, Nordland, Norway. The club affiliates with Norges Sjakkforbund and belongs to Helgeland og Salten Sjakkrets. It provides classical, rapid, and blitz chess, club championships, junior activities, training courses, and open tournaments. The club dates its history to 1907 and describes itself as one of Norway’s oldest chess clubs. Its long presence in Bodø includes both local competition and major tournament organization. For example, Bodø hosted the Norwegian Chess Championship in 1966, when 166 players competed. Moreover, the club has maintained annual city and club championships across several time controls. Terje Johannessen currently serves as Chairman of Bodø Sjakklag. Norges Sjakkforbund lists him as the club leader, while Norway’s current business registry also records him as chair of the association. In addition, the club’s June 2026 update was issued on behalf of the board under Johannessen’s name.🏆 Bodøsjakken and Tournament Activity
The club’s principal annual open tournament is Bodøsjakken. The competition developed from the long-running Bodø Grand Prix and now takes place in the modern surroundings of Stormen Konserthus in central Bodø. The Bodøsjakken 2026 runs from October 30 to November 1. Players compete over five classical rounds at 90 minutes plus 30 seconds per move. Moreover, the tournament receives official rating and simultaneously determines the Helgeland og Salten circuit champion in classical chess among eligible players. The organizers divide the competition into two rating groups. In addition, leading boards from the top section are shown on a large screen inside the venue. The club also works with Stormen Konserthus to create space where visitors and spectators can play chess outside the tournament hall. The 2025 edition attracted a strong field. GM Kristian Stuvik Holm won Group A ahead of CM Pål Nikolai Røyset and Martin Halsvik Larsen. Therefore, Bodøsjakken combines accessible regional competition with opportunities to face some of Norway’s stronger tournament players.♜ Club Championships and Competitive Chess
Bodø Sjakklag maintains a full internal competition program throughout the year. The club traditionally organizes a spring club championship and the Bodømesterskapet during the autumn. The competitive calendar covers classical, rapid, and blitz chess. For autumn 2026, the club schedules separate Bodømesterskapet competitions in all three formats. Classical rounds run from October through November, while the rapid championship takes place in September and the blitz championship in December. In addition, club evenings include handicap blitz, opening-based tournaments, casual team chess, unrated blitz, and online competitions. Consequently, members receive regular playing opportunities between the larger championship events. Bodø players also compete throughout northern Norway. In the 2026 Nordnorsk Mesterskap in Tromsø, the club sent four players. Junior William Ovesen finished among the leading players in his group.🎓 Junior Chess and Player Development
Youth chess has gained renewed momentum at Bodø Sjakklag. In spring 2026, the club ran a beginner course for children aged 8–15 at Bankgata ungdomsskole. The program used Øystein Brekke’s Sjakkskolen series as its instructional foundation. The club reported increased participation in children’s chess during the same season. Therefore, it plans further beginner instruction for both children and adults in autumn 2026. Moreover, the club intends to support competitive opportunities for its strongest juniors. Its June 2026 update outlined plans for a possible group trip to an international tournament in Fagernes during spring 2027. Junior development connects directly with the club’s wider competitive program. Young players can begin with instruction and casual games, then progress into rated club tournaments and regional competitions.🤝 Chess Community in Bodø
Regular club activity takes place at Bankgata ungdomsskole in central Bodø. The club uses the venue for playing evenings, championships, training, and beginner courses. Meanwhile, larger events move into prominent city venues. The partnership with Stormen Konserthus gives Bodøsjakken a central location and allows the club to present tournament chess to a wider audience. Bodø Sjakklag also maintains links with other clubs throughout northern Norway. Its players regularly meet competitors from Fauske, Mosjøen, Sortland, Narvik, Tromsø, Harstad, and other northern chess communities at circuit and championship events.
