♟️ About Bidasoa Xake Kluba

Bidasoa Xake Kluba is a non-profit chess club based in Irun, Gipuzkoa, Basque Country, Spain. The club was created in July 2019 by a group of local chess players who identified the need for a regional chess organization serving the wider Bidasoa area. Its principal objectives are chess education, tournament organization, and the development of competitive chess throughout Bidasoaldea. The club combines federated team competition with an extensive chess-school program for children, juniors, and adults. Its players compete in Gipuzkoa, Basque Country, and Spanish championships, while the club organizes local tournaments, school competitions, training activities, and FIDE-rated events. Moreover, its Circuito Bidasoa gives students practical tournament experience before they move into official competition. Carlos Pascual Cuadrado is the current President of Bidasoa Xake Kluba and also serves as Tournament Director for major club events. The 2026 season has brought several important results: Bidasoa A finished runner-up in the Gipuzkoa Preferente Team League, its Alevín team became Gipuzkoa school champion, and 17-year-old Ibon Muñoz Ferreira became the first player developed by the club to earn a FIDE title. The club is now preparing the II Open Internacional de Ajedrez Ciudad de Irun, scheduled for December 4–8, 2026.

📜 History and Development

Bidasoa Xake Kluba began in 2019 with the aim of creating a chess organization for Irun and the surrounding Bidasoa region. Since then, it has developed quickly through a combination of competitive teams, educational programs, and tournament organization. The club has recorded significant youth achievements during its relatively short history. In 2023, Bidasoa A became Basque Country Infantil Team Champion. Further progress followed through individual Gipuzkoa and Basque championships, while the club gradually expanded its team structure. By the 2026 Gipuzkoa Team League, Bidasoa was fielding four teams across four different categories, with 32 players participating. Salto Bidasoa A finished second in Preferente, the club’s best senior team result to date. Another milestone arrived in August 2026. Ibon Muñoz Ferreira, a member of the club since its foundation, reached the required 2200 FIDE Standard rating and earned the Candidate Master (CM) title. He became the first Bidasoa Xake player to achieve an international FIDE title.

🎓 Chess School and Youth Development

Chess education is one of Bidasoa Xake Kluba’s main activities. Its school provides classes from beginner level through competitive training, with sessions running throughout the working week at the club’s permanent premises in Irun. The club also offers adult courses and summer programs. During summer 2026, it organized introductory chess courses for school-age students and adults, while enrollment for the 2026–2027 season includes initiation and several progressive training levels. The Circuito Bidasoa forms an important bridge between lessons and official competition. Students play structured internal tournaments where they learn practical skills such as using a chess clock, following competition rules, avoiding illegal moves, and handling both victories and defeats. In addition, supervised online tournaments provide further practice throughout the season. This investment in youth chess has produced strong results. In March 2026, the club’s Alevín team became Gipuzkoa School Champion. Bidasoa players also competed during 2026 in Basque and Spanish youth championships, including U18 team events and Spanish age-group competitions.

♜ Team and Tournament Activity

Bidasoa Xake Kluba maintains an active competitive calendar at several levels. In the 2026 Gipuzkoa league, its A team competed in Preferente, Bidasoa B in Primera, Bidasoa C in Segunda, and Bidasoa D in Tercera. The first team’s runner-up finish in Preferente represented the best league result in the club’s history. Meanwhile, younger players increasingly appeared across the club’s squads, giving them experience in classical team competition. The club also organizes and collaborates on major Gipuzkoa events. In 2025, it helped stage the Gipuzkoa Individual and Team Blitz Championships in Irun. It also runs the Festival de Ajedrez Bidasoa Xake and the large Torneo Salto Systems series. The April 2026 Salto Systems event attracted approximately 150 participants.

🌟 II Open Internacional de Ajedrez Ciudad de Irun 2026

The II Open Internacional de Ajedrez Ciudad de Irun 2026 is scheduled from December 4–8, 2026 in Irun. Bidasoa Xake Kluba organizes the tournament following the inaugural edition held in 2025. The event consists of two FIDE-rated sections. Group A is designed for players rated 1900 or higher, while Group B is for players below 2000. Therefore, competitors rated from 1900 to 1999 can choose between the two groups. Both sections use a seven-round Swiss system and a classical time control of 90 minutes + 30 seconds per move. The organizer limits each group to 80 players, giving the tournament a maximum capacity of 160 participants. Carlos Pascual Cuadrado serves as Tournament Director. Francisco José Ferrer Escudero is Chief Arbiter, with Urtzi Urdanpilleta García as Deputy Chief Arbiter and Asier Cuesta Senosiain completing the published arbiting team. The tournament has an announced prize fund of €12,000. Consequently, the second edition represents a substantial expansion of the club’s international tournament activity and strengthens Irun’s position within the regional chess calendar.
