♟️ About ASVÖ Schachverein Urfahr
ASVÖ Schachverein Urfahr, also known as SV Urfahr, is a historic chess club based in Linz-Urfahr, Upper Austria. Its chess tradition dates back to 1947, when organized chess operated as a section of Sportvereinigung Urfahr. Today, the club provides a meeting place for players who enjoy competitive league chess, tournaments, analysis, and recreational over-the-board play. The present independent Schachverein Urfahr was established in 1996. Since then, the organization has remained an active part of the Upper Austrian chess community. Moreover, it competes within the structure of the Schach Landesverband Oberösterreich and maintains connections with the wider ASVÖ sporting network. Regular club evenings take place at Sportbuffet Seidlgartl in Linz-Urfahr, where members and guests meet every Friday from 18:00. The club welcomes experienced competitors as well as recreational players. Therefore, players can move naturally from casual club chess into team competitions and nationally rated tournaments.🏆 Linzer Stadtmeisterschaft
The best-known tournament organized by ASVÖ Schachverein Urfahr is the Linzer Stadtmeisterschaft, or Linz City Championship. The modern tournament series was revived in 1995, largely through the efforts of long-serving Urfahr chess official Alfred Huber. Since then, Schachverein Urfahr has developed the competition into a regular fixture on the Upper Austrian tournament calendar. The event traditionally combines an open classical tournament with the official Linz City Champion title. Therefore, players from outside Linz can compete for the overall tournament prizes, while the highest-finishing eligible Linz player receives the city championship title. In 2026, the club organizes the 32nd Linzer Stadtmeisterschaft – Turnierschach Open from September 7–12 at Volkshaus Harbach. The tournament features seven Swiss-system rounds and counts for Austrian national Elo. Wolf-Dieter Gottwald serves as Tournament Director for the 2026 edition, while International Arbiter Gerald Hametner acts as Chief Arbiter.♜ Competitive and Team Chess
ASVÖ Schachverein Urfahr participates actively in the Upper Austrian team championship system. Club members compete in regional league matches against other chess organizations from Linz and throughout Upper Austria. Team chess provides members with regular long-form competitive experience during the season. Moreover, the club fields several players across different levels, allowing both experienced competitors and developing players to represent Urfahr. The organization also maintains its own club activities and training opportunities. Consequently, regular Friday meetings provide members with time for friendly games, analysis, preparation, and competitive practice between official matches. The club’s long association with organized Upper Austrian chess gives members a direct route from local club play into official federation competitions.🌱 Youth and Community Chess
Schachverein Urfahr has a long record of supporting junior and beginner chess in Linz. The club has organized Schülerliga tournaments for young players and has hosted beginner and amateur competitions alongside youth events. These tournaments provided children with an accessible introduction to competitive chess while also giving parents and inexperienced adult players an opportunity to participate. For example, the club has organized dedicated amateur tournaments for players with little or no rating experience. Furthermore, earlier Schülerliga events welcomed children even if they did not belong to a chess club. This inclusive approach reflects the club’s broader philosophy. Players can join for the social side of chess, while those with sporting ambitions can progress toward rated tournaments and league competition.📜 History and Tradition
Chess activity in Urfahr can be traced to 1947, when a chess section operated within Sportvereinigung Urfahr. Two figures played particularly important roles in the club’s development: Josef Zeilinger and Alfred Huber. Huber joined the Urfahr chess organization before 1955 and later became one of its leading officials. In 1995, Huber played a major role in restoring the Linzer Stadtmeisterschaft. Then, in 1996, the independent Schachverein Urfahr was established, with Huber serving as its first chairman until 2002. His contribution extended beyond the club. From 1995 to 2002, he also served as the ASVÖ Upper Austrian chess representative. In recognition of his work, the Upper Austrian Chess Federation awarded him its Gold Medal of Honor in 2002, while Schachverein Urfahr named him Honorary Chairman for life. The club has continued this tradition through successive generations of officials and players. In 2024, it staged the 30th Linzer Turnierschach Open, while the 32nd edition follows in 2026. Nearly eight decades after organized chess began in Urfahr, the club continues to combine local tradition, tournament organization, team competition, and community chess in northern Linz.
