♟️ About Associazione Ricreativa Culturale Le Muse ETS

Associazione Ricreativa Culturale Le Muse ETS is a cultural, recreational, and community association based in Caltagirone, Sicily, Italy. The organization has been active since July 2019, when President Sandro Copernico and a group of collaborators created it to develop permanent cultural initiatives for the city. Its activities extend beyond chess to literature, theatre, music, cinema, creative workshops, youth projects, and civic participation, often in cooperation with the Municipality of Caltagirone and other local associations. Chess has nevertheless become one of Le Muse’s most visible sporting activities. The association works closely with A.S.D. Accademia Scacchistica Don Pietro Carrera and organizes both introductory and official competitive events. Its recent chess program includes the Gran Rapid d’Autunno, youth tournaments qualifying for the Italian Youth Championship, and the increasingly prominent Le Muse Scacchi Fest. Through these projects, the association brings FIDE-rated chess into historic and civic venues around Caltagirone while connecting tournament activity with education and community participation. Sandro Copernico remains the current President of Associazione Ricreativa Culturale Le Muse ETS and the principal public contact for its chess events. His leadership is confirmed by current Italian Third Sector records and local cultural activity in 2026. The association has two major tournaments still ahead in 2026: the 3rd Gran Rapid d’Autunno on November 8 and the 2nd Le Muse Scacchi Fest from December 18–20, both organized in cooperation with Accademia Scacchistica Don Pietro Carrera.

📜 Cultural and Community Development

Le Muse was created with a deliberately broad cultural mission. When the association began operating in 2019, Sandro Copernico described its objective as creating concrete and lasting projects for Caltagirone across fields including chess, theatre, music, photography, and cinema. That multidisciplinary character remains visible today. In 2025–2026, Le Muse participated in the KAIRÒS – Il tempo opportuno youth-development initiative, including the “Risorsa Città” laboratories. Activities combined chess with theatre, creative expression, games, and civic participation. The association also remains active in Caltagirone’s literary life. In June 2026, for example, it organized a public event dedicated to Ottavia Penna, one of the women elected to Italy’s Constituent Assembly, with Sandro Copernico opening the program alongside representatives of the city and cultural community.

🎓 Youth Chess and Player Development

Le Muse uses chess not only for competition but also as an educational and youth-development activity. On May 24, 2026, the association organized the Torneo Giovanile del Convitto at the Convitto INPS “Luigi Sturzo” in Caltagirone. The tournament was officially recognized for FIDE Rapid rating and served as a qualifier for the 2026 Campionato Italiano Giovanile (CIG). The competition used five rounds at 25 minutes plus a 10-second increment and provided age-group competition for young players. Therefore, children who encounter chess through local educational or community programs can progress into Italy’s formal federation tournament structure. The event was also included in Caltagirone’s wider Maggio dei Libri 2026 cultural program, illustrating how Le Muse integrates chess with the city’s broader educational and cultural calendar.

⚡ Gran Rapid d’Autunno

The Gran Rapid d’Autunno has developed into one of Le Muse’s recurring chess events. The inaugural tournament was held in 2024 and attracted 42 players from Caltagirone and other parts of eastern Sicily. CM Davide Pulvirenti won the main Open tournament. The second edition followed in 2025, when Diego Christian Alfò took first place ahead of local player Roberto Annaloro. The event again brought together competitors from across Sicily in the historic center of Caltagirone. The 3rd Gran Rapid d’Autunno is scheduled for November 8, 2026 at the Salone degli Specchi, Corte Capitaniale. Le Muse and Accademia Scacchistica Don Pietro Carrera will organize the nine-round FIDE-rated rapid event with support from the Municipality of Caltagirone. Players will compete at 12 minutes plus a 3-second increment per move, with cash prizes for the overall leaders and additional awards across rating, senior, and youth categories.

🌟 Le Muse Scacchi Fest

The Le Muse Scacchi Fest is the association’s principal classical tournament. Its first edition took place from December 26–28, 2025 at Palazzo dell’Aquila in Caltagirone and was included in the official Italian Chess Federation calendar as well as the city’s Christmas program. The 2nd Le Muse Scacchi Fest is scheduled for December 18–20, 2026 in the Salone di Rappresentanza Mario Scelba at Palazzo dell’Aquila. The festival will offer three FIDE-rated classical sections. Open A is for players rated 1650 and above, Open B is for players below 1700, while Open C is for players below 1550. All sections will play six rounds at 90 minutes plus a 30-second increment per move. The published cash prize fund totals €1,200, with additional trophies for rating and youth categories. The tournament is jointly organized by Le Muse and A.S.D. Accademia Scacchistica Don Pietro Carrera, while registrations and organizational communication are handled directly through Le Muse.
