♟️ About Association Échéphile Béthunoise
Association Échéphile Béthunoise (AEB) is a chess club and tournament organizer based in Béthune, Pas-de-Calais, France. Founded in 1977, the club is affiliated with the Fédération Française des Échecs (FFE) and competes within the Hauts-de-France chess structure. Its permanent playing venue is Salle Frédéric Chopin in the Centre Sportif du 8-Ter, where members meet every Saturday. AEB combines competitive team chess, youth training, FIDE-rated tournaments, Rapid chess, and regular club activity. The club competes in French interclub competition and maintains a youth team in the regional structure. Its two best-known annual events are the Open International d'Échecs de Béthune, held between Christmas and New Year, and the traditional Trophée Philippe Cieslak Rapid tournament on Ascension Day. Philippe Damarez is the current President of Association Échéphile Béthunoise and its principal tournament organizer. He directs both the club's regular activities and its major open events. AEB has remained particularly active in 2026: its Rapid tournament set a new attendance record with 135 players, while preparations are underway for the 45th International Chess Open of Béthune, scheduled for December 26–30, 2026.📜 History and Development
The Béthune chess club was established in 1977 under founding President Henri Kuc, who led the organization until his death in 1991. Only three years after its creation, the club launched the first International Chess Open of Béthune in 1980. The tournament became a permanent part of the French year-end chess calendar. Following Kuc's death, the International Open adopted the Challenge Henri Kuc name in his memory. The competition has since developed into one of AEB's defining projects. The club has also built a long international friendship with Hastings Chess Club in England. The two organizations have maintained a twinning relationship that includes periodic visits, friendly matches, and social activities.♜ Competitive and Team Chess
Association Échéphile Béthunoise remains active within the French federation's team structure. The current FFE club record lists AEB in Nationale 4 for senior interclub competition. Its youth players also compete in the regional youth division. Weekly club sessions take place on Saturdays from 3:00 PM to 7:00 PM. Players can use these sessions for training, casual games, analysis, and preparation for team matches and tournaments. This combination of regular club chess and federation competition gives members a pathway from local activity into organized league play.🎓 Youth Chess
Youth development has long formed part of AEB's club program. The association reserves dedicated Saturday training time for younger players before the main club session. These activities introduce children to chess fundamentals while also preparing more experienced juniors for competitive play. Young members can progress into regional team competition and participate in the club's own tournaments. In addition, AEB's annual Rapid and International Open events provide opportunities to play against competitors from other clubs and federations.⚡ Trophée Philippe Cieslak 2026
The 25th Tournoi Rapide d'Échecs de Béthune – Trophée Philippe Cieslak took place on May 14, 2026. The FIDE- and FFE-rated tournament used a nine-round Swiss system at 12 minutes plus a three-second increment per move. A record 135 players participated, making the 2026 edition the largest Rapid tournament in the club's history. Samuel Dubuisson won the event with an excellent 8/9 score. Philippe Damarez served as Organizer, while Stéphane Renard was the arbiter.🌟 International Chess Open of Béthune
The Open International d'Échecs de Béthune is AEB's flagship event and has been organized annually since 1980. The 44th edition, held from December 26–30, 2025, attracted 249 players. French Grandmaster Jean-Marc Degraeve won the leading section. The tournament is divided into three rating groups. This structure allows strong titled players, experienced club competitors, and developing players to compete in appropriate sections. AEB is now preparing the 45th International Chess Open of Béthune, scheduled for December 26–30, 2026 at Salle Olof Palme in Béthune. All three sections will be FIDE-rated and played over nine rounds at 90 minutes plus 30 seconds per move. Tournament A is for players rated 1900 and above, while B and C provide separate rating-based competition. Philippe Damarez is the official organizer of the 2026 edition. The top prize in Tournament A is €1,400.🏛️ Organization and Leadership
Philippe Damarez currently serves as President of Association Échéphile Béthunoise. The Fédération Française des Échecs also lists him as the club's official contact. Damarez plays a direct role in tournament organization. He is officially registered as Organizer of both the 2026 Rapid tournament and the upcoming 45th International Open. The club's permanent activity takes place at Salle Frédéric Chopin, while larger tournaments use additional Béthune venues when greater playing capacity is required.
