♟️ About Associação de Xadrez Oficina Criativa de Pombal

Associação de Xadrez Oficina Criativa de Pombal (AXOCP) is a chess association based in Pombal, Portugal. The organization was formally established in 2019, building on chess projects that its founders had already developed in the city. AXOCP promotes competitive chess, training, youth participation, team competition, and community activities. Its guiding concept, “Conhecer Pombal à boleia de um xeque-mate,” connects tournament chess with the promotion of Pombal and its local culture. The association welcomes children, adults, beginners, and experienced tournament players. Its program includes regular chess sessions, classical and rapid competitions, participation in Portuguese national team leagues, and FIDE-rated events. During the 2025–2026 season, the Oficina Criativa de Pombal-Jrsf team competed in the Portuguese National Team Championship’s 3rd Division, Série C and secured its place in the division before the final round. AXOCP has also worked with the Portuguese Chess Federation, Associação de Xadrez de Leiria, Pombal Municipality, and Pombal Parish Council on larger events. Jorge Barrento is the President and principal public contact of AXOCP. He has led the development of the organization and regularly serves as Tournament Director and arbiter at its events. The association’s flagship competition is the Open Internacional de Xadrez Marquês de Pombal. The 17th edition is scheduled for December 26–29, 2026 and forms part of the Portuguese Chess Federation’s National Classical Circuit and the Portugal Chess Tour 2026–2027.

📜 Development of Chess in Pombal

Before AXOCP became a formal association, the Oficina Criativa project was already organizing chess activities and tournaments in Pombal. The creation of the association in 2019 gave those activities a dedicated organizational structure focused exclusively on chess. From the beginning, AXOCP combined competition with educational and cultural objectives. Its programs have encouraged logical reasoning, concentration, decision-making, and analytical skills, particularly among younger players. The association also developed a distinctive approach to tournament organization by linking chess events with the city itself. Consequently, visiting players are introduced not only to competitive chess but also to Pombal’s local institutions, culture, and community.

♜ Team and Competitive Chess

AXOCP competes within the Portuguese Chess Federation’s national team structure. During the 2025–2026 season, its team played in 3rd Division, Série C. In March 2026, Oficina Criativa defeated Vitória Clube de Santarém 2.5–1.5 and later beat Cine Clube de Torres Novas 3–1. The latter result mathematically secured the team’s survival in the division with one round remaining. The squad included players such as Andrea Gori, Miguel Cardoso, Jorge Barrento, Micael Gomes, and Ângelo Monforte. Club players also compete regularly in individual events throughout Portugal. In June 2026, Andrea Gori won a national +65 senior title while representing the Pombal chess community.

🏆 Open Internacional Marquês de Pombal

The Open Internacional de Xadrez Marquês de Pombal is AXOCP’s principal annual tournament and predates the formal creation of the association. The 16th edition, held from December 26–29, 2025, formed part of the Portugal Chess Tour 2025–2026 and the Portuguese Chess Federation’s National Classical Circuit. The seven-round FIDE-rated tournament attracted 62 players and was won by IM José Francisco Veiga. The 17th Open Internacional Marquês de Pombal will take place from December 26–29, 2026 at Bombeiros Voluntários de Pombal. Players will compete over seven Swiss-system rounds with a classical time control of 90 minutes plus 30 seconds per move. The tournament offers €1,450 in confirmed cash prizes, with an additional €500 added if participation reaches at least 75 players. Awards also cover youth categories, women, seniors, rating groups, and team standings. Jorge Barrento again leads the organizing team.

🌱 Community and National Events

AXOCP’s activity extends beyond its own Open. In June 2026, Pombal hosted both the Portuguese Women’s Championship and the Portuguese Senior Championships, adding important national-level competition to the city’s chess calendar. The association also maintains regular local chess activity and encourages its younger members to compete in tournaments throughout central Portugal. Its players participate in events organized by neighboring clubs while AXOCP shares information about regional and national tournaments with its community. This combination of local training, national team competition, FIDE-rated tournaments, and cooperation with chess institutions defines AXOCP’s current role in Portuguese chess.
