Associação de Xadrez de Imperatriz – AXI is a chess organization based in Imperatriz, Maranhão, Brazil. It promotes over-the-board chess through tournaments, local partnerships, player development, and community activities. Its events welcome junior players, adult club competitors, experienced tournament players, and titled participants from Maranhão and other Brazilian states. AXI plays an active role in the development of chess in Imperatriz and the wider Tocantina region. The association works with local chess groups, educational institutions, tournament organizers, and the Federação Maranhense de Xadrez. Moreover, its competitions operate within the official structures of the Confederação Brasileira de Xadrez and the International Chess Federation when registered for national and international rating. The organization supports different forms of competitive chess, including classical, rapid, and blitz events. Therefore, local players can gain regular tournament experience while developing their national and international ratings. One notable project was the creation of the first women’s chess club at Universidade Estadual da Região Tocantina do Maranhão. Tournament organization is a central part of AXI’s work. The association organizes and supports FIDE- and CBX-rated competitions in standard, rapid, and blitz chess. Its event program includes the CarnaChess tournament series, regional rapid and blitz competitions, local open tournaments, and the Aberto do Brasil “Princesa do Tocantins.” The Aberto do Brasil “Princesa do Tocantins” began in 2024 and returned for a second edition in 2025. In 2026, AXI organizes the third edition in Imperatriz. The event brings together players from several Brazilian states and includes separate standard and blitz competitions. The III Aberto do Brasil de Xadrez “Princesa do Tocantins” 2026 takes place from July 24 to 27 at Posseidon Hotel. Both competitions count for national and international rating. Furthermore, the tournament forms part of Brazil’s official competitive chess structure and attracts club players, national-title holders, and internationally titled participants. Through its tournaments, partnerships, and educational initiatives, Associação de Xadrez de Imperatriz continues to expand access to competitive chess in southern Maranhão. Overall, AXI provides an important connection between local chess development and the wider Brazilian tournament community.
