♟️ About Anaitasuna-Kakute Xake Taldea

Anaitasuna-Kakute Xake Taldea is a long-established chess club based in Azkoitia, Gipuzkoa, in Spain’s Basque Country. The club began its journey in 1979 and celebrated its 40th anniversary in 2019. Therefore, it has now supported local chess for more than four decades. Throughout this period, Anaitasuna-Kakute has combined competitive chess with training, community activities, and opportunities for young players. The club competes in regional team competitions and represents Azkoitia at events across Gipuzkoa and the wider Basque chess community. José Luis Fernández serves as president during the club’s 2024–2028 board term, supported by a structured management team that oversees its sporting and organizational activities.

🏆 Tournaments and Competitive Chess

The club organizes an extensive program of chess tournaments in Azkoitia. Its recurring competitions include the Villa de Azkoitia tournament, the Anaitasuna-Kakute Cup, the San Andrés Tournament, Anai Blitz, school competitions, youth festivals, and other rapid and team events. In addition, the club regularly publishes tournament information, registrations, results, photographs, and Chess-Results links through its official website. The Azkoitia Hiria team tournament reached its 44th edition in 2026 and welcomed teams from several Basque and neighboring chess clubs. Meanwhile, the 2026 Azkoitia Sustapena Festival, organized together with Gros Xake Taldea, attracted around 160 participants. These established events give players of different ages and strengths regular opportunities to compete in classical, rapid, blitz, individual, and team formats.

🌱 Youth Chess and Community Development

Youth development forms an important part of Anaitasuna-Kakute Xake Taldea’s work. Through the Anai Xake Eskola and its junior tournaments, the club introduces children to organized chess and helps developing players gain practical tournament experience. Moreover, its promotion festivals provide competition for age groups such as Under 20, Under 14, and Under 12. The club also maintains a visible presence in local community life by sharing team results, player achievements, tournament announcements, and educational activities. In addition, Anaitasuna-Kakute publishes a child and adolescent protection protocol for its activities. This combination of structured training, regular competition, safeguarding, and community involvement allows the club to support both recreational players and ambitious young competitors while strengthening chess culture in Azkoitia.
