Amicale Echecs is an active chess club based in Gex, Ain, France, serving the wider Pays de Gex and Geneva-border region. Founded on September 30, 2012, the association is affiliated with the Fédération Française des Échecs (FFE) and has developed from a small local group into one of the largest chess communities in the department. The club is led by Charles Lalieu, who serves as President and is also an experienced chess trainer and tournament organizer. Under his leadership, Amicale Echecs has expanded beyond its original Gex base and now runs activities in Gex, Versonnex, Ferney-Voltaire, and Divonne-les-Bains. The FFE currently records 88 Licence A players and 131 Licence B players with Amicale Echecs. Its program combines competitive team chess, FIDE-rated tournaments, junior development, regular training, club championships, and activities for recreational players.

🏆 Tournaments & Competitive Chess

Amicale Echecs organizes an increasingly ambitious calendar of FIDE-rated tournaments. Its flagship competition is the Open International de Gex, held during the Ascension weekend and attracting players from France, Switzerland, and other countries. The 3rd Open International de Gex took place in May 2026 as a seven-round FIDE-rated Swiss tournament. The competition offered classical chess with a 90-minute time control plus a 30-second increment from move one and welcomed both titled players and club competitors. The club also organizes the Activ’Chess Lémanique, a FIDE-rated rapid tournament bringing together players from the wider Lake Geneva region. Other events include the Championnat du Plateau de Gex, club championships, junior competitions, amateur events, and training tournaments designed to give members experience in longer time controls. Amicale Echecs also participates in French team chess. Its senior teams compete in the national and regional interclub structure, while junior teams participate in youth competitions organized through the FFE and the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes chess structure.

Youth development is a major part of Amicale Echecs. The club provides weekly instruction for children and adults across several Pays de Gex locations, making regular chess training accessible to families throughout the area. Training ranges from introductory sessions for young beginners to advanced coaching for experienced tournament players. The club has worked with titled players and qualified coaches, while Charles Lalieu holds French federation qualifications in chess instruction and training. Young members regularly participate in departmental, regional, and French youth championships. The club also organizes beginner tournaments that allow less experienced players to experience formal competition before entering larger rated events. In addition, Amicale Echecs provides advanced training opportunities. These have included sessions with titled players and specialized instruction for competitors seeking to improve their tournament performance.

📚 History & Development

Amicale Echecs was established in 2012 as a French non-profit sporting association dedicated to the practice and development of chess. The organization initially operated with a small group of approximately ten enthusiasts before expanding significantly over the following years. The club progressively developed additional activity centers across the Pays de Gex. A venue in Ferney-Voltaire opened in 2024, while a new program in Divonne-les-Bains followed, complementing the established sessions in Gex and Versonnex. This multi-location structure has enabled the association to serve a geographically dispersed community close to the Swiss border. The club now combines grassroots instruction with national team competition and international tournament organization. Amicale Echecs continues to develop its competitive program while maintaining a strong community focus, providing opportunities for children, adults, beginners, ambitious juniors, and experienced tournament players throughout the Pays de Gex.
