♟️ About Amateur Chess Organization (ACO)

The Amateur Chess Organization (ACO) is an international organizer for amateur and senior chess players. It has operated from the Stuttgart region of Germany since 2012. The organization focuses on players below 2400 rating points. Moreover, it welcomes participants from many countries and competitive backgrounds.

ACO was founded by Grandmaster Falko Bindrich and International Master Tobias Hirneise. Both organizers bring extensive experience as players, coaches, and tournament professionals. In addition, they remain personally involved at ACO events. Their team also includes grandmaster trainers, arbiters, support staff, and international partners.

The organization works independently from FIDE and describes its role as complementary. However, it follows a clear international model for amateur competition. ACO reports more than 3,500 participations and over 25,000 games since its launch. As a result, it has built a large returning community around chess, travel, and shared tournament experiences.

🏆 World Amateur and Senior Championships

ACO organizes the World Amateur Chess Championship, World Senior 50+ Championship, and World Super Senior 65+ Championship. These events normally take place at four-star or five-star resorts in Greece. Therefore, players can combine a serious chess program with a complete holiday experience.

The championships use seven separate rating groups, including a section for beginners. Consequently, participants mainly face opponents with a similar playing level. Each group has its own standings, prizes, trophies, and ACO championship title. The main tournaments usually feature nine classical rounds.

The chess program extends beyond the tournament games. Players can analyze their games with grandmasters after each round. Moreover, the schedule often includes lectures, simultaneous exhibitions, individual blitz, and team blitz. These activities give amateur players direct access to experienced international coaches.

ACO has welcomed participants from more than 60 countries. In addition, well-known grandmasters have joined its events as trainers or special guests. Past contributors include Daniel King, Zigurds Lanka, Spyridon Skembris, Judit Polgar, Alexei Shirov, and Vlastimil Hort. The organizer also provides multilingual assistance before and during each championship.

🌍 Chess, Travel and Player Experience

ACO designs its events around both players and accompanying persons. The tournament remains the central activity. However, the selected resorts also offer beaches, pools, restaurants, and leisure facilities. Therefore, non-playing partners and family members can enjoy the destination during the rounds.

The organizing team supports participants with registration, hotel arrangements, and practical travel questions. It also helps players understand rating groups and tournament schedules. Meanwhile, dedicated email addresses handle enquiries for the Amateur, Senior, and Super Senior championships. This structure keeps communication clear before arrival.

A friendly international atmosphere forms an important part of the ACO concept. Many participants return for several editions and build lasting chess friendships. Moreover, the rating-group format gives developing players realistic competitive goals. It also allows older players to compete within dedicated senior categories.
