♟️ About Allan de Arriada Gattass

Allan de Arriada Gattass is a Brazilian FIDE Master, chess tournament organizer, and active competitive player based in Guaíba, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. Originally from Pelotas, he has competed in Brazilian chess for more than two decades and has built a strong reputation within the chess community of southern Brazil. FIDE awarded Allan the FIDE Master title in 2013. He has competed successfully in classical, rapid, and blitz chess, including Brazilian national opens and Rio Grande do Sul state championships. Moreover, his long playing career gives him practical experience with the needs of tournament competitors. Alongside competitive chess, Allan has developed his own distinctive tournament project, Gambito Vilão. The event combines officially rated chess with food, music, social activities, and a less conventional tournament atmosphere. Therefore, his organizational approach aims to preserve serious competition while making the tournament an enjoyable social occasion for players and guests.

🏆 Gambito Vilão Chess Festival

The principal event organized by Allan Gattass is the Gambito Vilão Chess Festival in Guaíba. The tournament series began in 2023 and combines rapid and blitz chess with a distinctive festival format. Instead of limiting the event to games inside a tournament hall, Gambito Vilão adds entertainment, food, refreshments, and opportunities for players from different generations to meet socially. The second edition took place on September 20, 2025. Allan organized the event together with National Arbiter Lucas Ramos da Silva, while Andreia Gattass served as Event Director. That edition attracted an unusually strong field. Participants included grandmasters Alexandr Fier, Alejandro Hoffman, Darcy Lima, and André Diamant, together with several International Masters, FIDE Masters, National Masters, juniors, and amateur competitors. Both the rapid and blitz competitions counted for CBX and FIDE rating.

♜ 3rd Gambito Vilão 2026

Allan continues the tournament series with the 3rd Gambito Vilão Chess Festival 2026, scheduled for October 3, 2026, in Guaíba. The festival takes place at CTG Gomes Jardim and again combines separate rapid and blitz competitions. Both tournaments are registered for CBX and FIDE rating. The rapid tournament uses a time control of 10 minutes plus five seconds per move, while the blitz competition uses a faster format. The 2026 starting field again includes strong titled players. Among the registered competitors are GM Neuris Delgado Ramírez, IM Dragan Stamenkovic, GM André Diamant, FM Allan Gattass, and other experienced Brazilian and international players. Through this model, Gambito Vilão brings elite competitors and ordinary club players into the same festival environment.

🎸 Chess, Culture and Social Experience

A distinctive feature of Gambito Vilão is the combination of chess with Brazilian hospitality and live entertainment. The second edition included a traditional barbecue, drinks, and live music. Furthermore, the tournament brought together former champions, federation figures, club representatives, titled players, families, and chess enthusiasts. This atmosphere differentiates Gambito Vilão from conventional open tournaments. Players compete for official ratings and prizes, but the event also encourages conversation, networking, and interaction between different parts of the chess community. Allan works with arbiters, local businesses, sponsors, volunteers, and other organizers to deliver the event. Consequently, Gambito Vilão has developed its own recognizable identity within the Rio Grande do Sul tournament calendar.

🥇 Competitive Chess Career

Allan remains an active tournament player alongside his organizing work. His FIDE profile records participation in classical, rapid, and blitz competition, while the Brazilian Chess Confederation continues to list him in major tournaments during 2025 and 2026. He has achieved several notable results in Rio Grande do Sul chess and has been described in regional event coverage as a two-time Rio Grande do Sul chess champion. In July 2024, Allan also won both the Rapid and Blitz competitions at the Fenadoce Chess Tournament in Pelotas. The event attracted more than 170 registered participants across its different competitions. His continuing competitive activity is important to his work as an organizer. He experiences tournament conditions directly as a player and therefore understands the importance of clear regulations, reliable schedules, suitable playing conditions, qualified arbiters, and effective communication.

🌱 Promoting Chess in Rio Grande do Sul

Through Gambito Vilão and his broader participation in regional chess, Allan contributes to the visibility of competitive chess in Guaíba and Rio Grande do Sul. His tournaments give younger and lower-rated competitors an opportunity to play in the same field as grandmasters, international masters, and established Brazilian players. Moreover, the social format can attract people who may not normally attend a traditional rated tournament. Families and guests can participate in the wider festival environment while competitive players concentrate on the chess events. This combination of high-level chess and community atmosphere helps create another pathway for promoting over-the-board chess in southern Brazil.
