♟️ About Albanian Chess Federation (Federata Shqiptare e Shahut)

The Albanian Chess Federation (Federata Shqiptare e Shahut – FSHSH) is the national governing body for chess in Albania. Founded in 1933 and headquartered at the Olympic Park in Tirana, it represents Albanian chess within the International Chess Federation (FIDE) and the European Chess Union (ECU). The federation coordinates clubs, players, arbiters, coaches, national championships, ratings, international representation, and chess-development programs throughout the country. FSHSH manages a broad competition structure that includes the Albanian Individual Championships, National Team Championships, youth championships from U6 through U18, women’s chess, senior events, rapid and blitz competitions, and school-based programs. In recent years, it has also become an increasingly active organizer of major international events. Albania hosted the FIDE World Youth U14, U16 & U18 Championships in 2025 and the FIDE World Senior Team Chess Championship in 2026, both in Durrës. GM Erald Dervishi is the current President of the Albanian Chess Federation, having been re-elected at the federation’s General and Electoral Assembly in December 2024. Majlinda Pilinci serves as General Secretary and is one of the federation’s principal operational organizers and tournament directors. The federation remained highly active throughout 2026: it conducted national youth championships, women’s development projects, individual competitions, and the National Team Championship, which concluded at the end of August with SK Tirana winning both the Open and Women’s team titles.

🏛️ Organization and National Chess

FSHSH works with chess clubs and associations throughout Albania and is responsible for the national competitive structure. The federation’s domestic calendar includes individual championships, club team competition, national youth events, rapid and blitz tournaments, and qualification competitions. It also manages administrative areas such as player registration, arbitration, coaching, competition regulations, and national ratings. Erald Dervishi, Albania’s first Grandmaster, combines extensive competitive experience with his role as federation President. Meanwhile, Majlinda Pilinci plays a central role in day-to-day federation operations and regularly serves as Tournament Director or organizer at major Albanian and international events.

🏆 National Championships

The federation organizes championships for Albania’s strongest players as well as extensive club team competition. The 2025 Albanian Individual Championship Finals concluded in December. IM Dritan Mehmeti became Open National Champion, WFM Klean Shuqja won the Women’s Championship, and IM Ilir Seitaj captured the Senior title. In 2026, the federation continued the individual championship cycle while also staging the National Team Championships in August. Eight teams competed in the Open competition, where SK Tirana finished first with 12 match points, ahead of KS Butrinti and KS Partizani. SK Tirana also dominated the 2026 Women’s National Team Championship, completing the competition with a perfect 12 match points.

🎓 Youth Chess and Chess in Schools

Youth development is a major priority for FSHSH. The 2026 Albanian Youth Championships took place in Tirana from March 28 to April 5, with competitions spanning age categories from U6 through U18. These championships provide a national pathway for young players representing clubs from different parts of Albania. Successful juniors can progress toward Balkan, European, and FIDE world competitions. The federation is also expanding Chess in Schools (Shahu në Shkolla). Activities have included school championships, training courses, and cooperation with educational institutions in Tirana and other cities. Women’s and girls’ participation received additional attention in 2026. On March 27–28, FSHSH organized the FIDE WOM Girls & Women Event – Tirana 2026 in cooperation with the FIDE Commission for Women’s Chess. The program included workshops, simultaneous chess, educational activities, and direct links with the national youth championship.

🌍 Major International Events in Albania

Albania has become a regular host of major FIDE and ECU competitions. This international tournament program expanded significantly under the current federation leadership. One major milestone was the FIDE World Youth U14, U16 & U18 Championships 2025, held from October 3–16, 2025 in Durrës. Hundreds of young players from around the world competed across six Open and Girls categories. Majlinda Pilinci served as Tournament Director, while FSHSH organized the championship together with FIDE. The federation followed this with the FIDE World Senior Team Chess Championship 2026, also hosted in Durrës. Competition took place from April 19–28, with 36 teams in the 50+ category and 54 teams in the 65+ category. The United States won the 50+ championship, while Germany – Lasker took the 65+ title. Hosting 90 senior teams from around the world further strengthened Albania’s position as an international chess-event destination.

🌟 Development and International Cooperation

FSHSH works closely with FIDE, ECU, the Albanian National Olympic Committee, municipalities, educational institutions, and other partners. The federation’s recent international program has included world youth championships, senior championships, organizer and arbiter education, women’s chess initiatives, and cooperation with international chess-development organizations. Following the 2025 World Youth Championship, FSHSH also announced cooperation with the Kasparov Chess Foundation Academy, extending educational opportunities for leading young players. Together with the expansion of chess in schools and the national youth system, these initiatives form part of the federation’s effort to increase both participation and competitive standards in Albanian chess.
