♟️ About Space Coast Chess Foundation

The Space Coast Chess Foundation (SCCF) is an educational chess organization serving Brevard County and Florida’s Space Coast. Its mission is to promote the educational, scientific, cultural, and sporting value of chess for players of all ages. The foundation supports community and scholastic chess, provides chess equipment, and organizes US Chess and FIDE-rated tournaments in East Central Florida. SCCF is best known for the long-running Space Coast Open Chess Festival, which has been held almost every year since 1991. In addition, the foundation runs approximately monthly local tournaments, supports scholastic competition, and stages major statewide events. Its tournament program ranges from one-day events for scholastic and adult players to large weekend festivals with substantial guaranteed prize funds, titled players, side events, seminars, and FIDE-rated sections. Dr. Peter Koretsky is the current President of the Space Coast Chess Foundation, while the board also includes several active tournament organizers and directors. In 2026, SCCF completed the 31st Space Coast Open Chess Festival and is preparing to host the 2026 Harvey Lerman Florida State Championship on September 5–7 in Melbourne. 📜 Community and Scholastic Chess

The foundation’s work extends beyond its major tournament weekends. SCCF states that it established the local scholastic chess program that now supports recurring tournament activity in the Space Coast region. It also provides chess equipment and supports community programs designed to make organized chess more accessible. Its monthly tournament series currently takes place at the Frank T. Forester Recreation Center in Rockledge. These one-day events include competition for scholastic players as well as open sections for other US Chess members. The events are dual-rated where specified and provide both competitive opportunities and regular tournament experience for developing local players. SCCF does not currently operate a regular individual or group coaching program of its own. Instead, it offers occasional free seminars connected with the Space Coast Open and provides information about independent coaches and chess programs in Brevard County.

🏆 Space Coast Open Chess Festival

The Space Coast Open is the foundation’s flagship event and has a history dating to 1991. The tournament has developed into a festival-format weekend that combines serious rated competition with side activities, lectures, exhibitions, and special prizes. The 31st Space Coast Open Chess Festival took place on April 24–26, 2026 at the Hilton Melbourne at Rialto Place. It offered a $20,000 guaranteed prize fund and five main sections. The Master/Expert and Under 2000 sections were FIDE rated, while the tournament also carried enhanced US Chess Grand Prix status. The foundation has already scheduled the 32nd Space Coast Open Chess Festival for April 23–25, 2027. The planned format again features five rounds, multiple rating sections, FIDE rating in the top sections, and an enhanced US Chess Grand Prix designation.

♜ 2026 Florida State Championship

SCCF is also organizing the 2026 Harvey Lerman Florida State Championship, scheduled for September 5–7, 2026 at Hilton Melbourne at Rialto Place in Melbourne, Florida. The tournament is a US Chess Heritage Event and carries 60 Grand Prix points. The championship uses a six-round Swiss format with a time control of G/90+30 in all sections. The Open and Under 2050 sections are FIDE rated, and the event offers a $16,000 fully guaranteed prize fund. Florida players can compete for official state championship honors, while players from outside Florida may also enter the tournament. The weekend additionally includes the Florida State Blitz Championship and other side competition. 🏛️ Organization and Leadership

The current SCCF board is led by President Dr. Peter Koretsky. Ori Tal, Peter Dyson, Andrew Rea, Sean Malone, and SureshKumar Rajamani serve as Vice Presidents, while Alex Dshalalow serves as Vice President and Secretary. Peter Dyson also serves as Treasurer. Koretsky has also been directly involved in organizing the Space Coast Open and coordinating sponsor relations. Meanwhile, the foundation works with experienced tournament personnel for specific events. Recent Space Coast Open editions have involved Jon Haskel as co-organizer and Chief Tournament Director, while the local monthly series lists Steven Vigil as Chief Tournament Director and SureshKumar Rajamani as Assistant Tournament Director.
