Bude Chess Club is an active chess club based in Bude, Cornwall, England. The club was established in September 2012 and meets on Thursday evenings from 7:30 PM to 10:30 PM at the Royal British Legion, 5 Burn View, Bude. It welcomes players of different strengths for competitive and social chess and participates extensively in competitions organized by the Cornwall County Chess Association. Despite its relatively small membership, Bude has developed an unusually broad competitive program. The club participates in the County Shield, Quickplay League, Minor League, Roberts Cup, A.W. Busby Cup, and Roger Grime Cup, while also running its own standard-play and rapidplay championships. Bude won the Cornwall County Championship in both 2023–2024 and 2024–2025, completing consecutive championship seasons. In recognition of its wider contribution to chess, the English Chess Federation named Bude Chess Club its Small Club of the Year in 2020. John Constable is the club’s principal organizer and public contact. Together with his wife Chris Constable, he has played a central role in developing Bude Chess since the club’s formation. Both are experienced English Chess Federation arbiters, and their activity extends well beyond regular club nights. They organize major congresses in Cornwall and Devon, including the Simon Bartlett Memorial Congress, Torquay Riviera Chess Congress, and Peter & Peggy Clarke Memorial Rapidplay. The immediate 2026 program includes the 4th Torquay Riviera Chess Congress from September 5–11 and the 10th Peter & Peggy Clarke Memorial Rapidplay on October 3.

📜 History and Development

Bude Chess Club began in September 2012 after John and Chris Constable moved to Cornwall from Surrey. Both had previously been closely involved with Coulsdon Chess Fellowship and brought significant experience in chess organization, coaching, tournament play, and arbiting. The new club was initially promoted through a public simultaneous exhibition in Bude by talented local junior Theo Slade. Its first competitive club tournament began later that month, while Bude played its first inter-club match in March 2014. The club soon entered Cornwall league and cup competition. It won the Roger Grime Knockout Cup in 2018 and 2019, and its combination of league participation, junior chess, tournament administration, and community activity later earned national recognition from the ECF. That development continued with Bude becoming Cornwall County Champion in 2023–2024 and again in 2024–2025.

♜ Cornwall Team and Club Chess

Bude competes across several levels of Cornwall team chess. For the 2026–2027 season, its program includes teams in the County Shield, Quickplay League, Minor League, Roberts Cup, A.W. Busby Cup, and Roger Grime Cup. Chris Constable captains the County Shield and Quickplay teams, while John Constable is responsible for the Roberts Cup and A.W. Busby Cup teams. Lloyd Russell manages the Minor League team. The new competitive season begins in September 2026. Fixtures include matches against Calstock, Newquay, Carnon Downs, Liskeard, Camborne, Lerryn, and North Cornwall, giving members a substantial program of league and cup chess through spring 2027. Alongside external competition, Bude runs its own Standard Play Championship and Rapidplay Championship. The 2025–2026 rapid championship used an all-play-all format with a time control of 30 minutes plus a 15-second increment per move.

🏆 South West Chess Congresses

Tournament organization is one of Bude Chess Club’s defining activities. John and Chris Constable organize several recurring competitions that attract players from across the South West and other parts of England. The 7th Simon Bartlett Memorial Chess Congress was held from February 27–March 1, 2026 at the TLH Victoria Hotel in Torquay. The congress continues a memorial series named after Simon Bartlett, a former Bude player remembered by the club and local chess community. Bude Chess is also organizing the 4th Torquay Riviera Chess Congress from September 5–11, 2026 at the TLH Carlton Hotel in Torquay. The congress offers a full week of FIDE- and ECF-rated chess, with separate morning and afternoon tournaments and Open and rating-limited sections. This event gives players considerable scheduling flexibility. Participants can enter one tournament or combine morning and afternoon sections for a much more intensive week of classical chess.

⚡ Peter & Peggy Clarke Memorial Rapidplay

Another established Bude Chess event is the Peter & Peggy Clarke Memorial Rapidplay, named in memory of two distinguished figures in English chess. The 10th edition is scheduled for October 3, 2026 at Halwill Parish Hall in Halwill Junction, Devon. The tournament will consist of six Swiss-system rounds with a time control of 25 minutes plus a 10-second increment per move. The competition is submitted for ECF rapid rating and offers cash prizes. John Constable serves as the principal organizer, with Bude Chess handling entries and tournament administration. Together with the Riviera and Simon Bartlett congresses, the event demonstrates how Bude Chess operates beyond its local membership. The club has become an active organizer of tournament chess across Cornwall and Devon.

🎓 Community and Junior Chess

Bude Chess has historically placed considerable emphasis on junior and beginner chess. Its junior section previously provided structured instruction, group lessons, games, and participation in events such as the UK Chess Challenge Cornwall Megafinal. This youth work formed an important part of the ECF citation when Bude received the 2020 Small Club of the Year Award. The federation highlighted the club’s systematic junior instruction alongside its league teams and regional tournament work. The separate junior club did not operate during the 2025–2026 season, according to the club’s current junior-chess information. However, Bude continues to welcome players of different ages and abilities at its main club and maintains junior membership options.
