grenke Chess Open & grenke Freestyle Chess Open brings two flagship formats together in one festival: classical chess and Freestyle chess under the same roof. The event runs April 2-6, 2026 in Karlsruhe, Germany, and it pairs a world-scale open atmosphere with serious competitive stakes across multiple rating-based sections. You play a 9-round Swiss in either the Chess Open or the Freestyle Open, with clear A/B/C groups that fit everyone from ambitious juniors to titled professionals. The combined cash prize fund reaches EUR 285,000, and the A-Open fields put top-level competition within reach in a setting known for strong international attendance. If you want classical rating performance, norm chances, or a fresh strategic challenge in Freestyle, this weekend offers both in a single travel plan.

You can choose your preferred tournament at registration and still keep flexibility, because the regulations allow a one-time transfer from the Chess Open to the Freestyle Open up to Round 5 under defined conditions. The Freestyle A-Open also adds a direct championship pathway, because the winner earns a qualification place for the FIDE Freestyle Chess World Championship 2027, and the top three women in the Freestyle A-Open qualify for the FIDE Women’s Freestyle Chess World Championship 2026 under the event’s participation conditions. The Congress Center Karlsruhe provides a central-city venue with large-capacity event halls, and the timetable schedules two rounds per full day across the Easter holiday window. You need a FIDE-ID to participate, and the event uses rating limits that assign each player to the correct section at the start of the tournament.

🏆 Prize Fund

The organizers guarantee all listed cash prizes. Each player can win only one prize, except for team prizes. The event uses Buchholz as the tiebreak system, and it applies specific sharing rules by tournament and section. Organizers pay prize money by bank transfer, and main prize winners must attend the awards ceremony. Organizers handle prize payments for participants not subject to tax in Germany in accordance with the German Income Tax Act (EStG).

In the grenke Chess Open A-Open, organizers distribute the main prizes according to the Hort system. In the grenke Freestyle Chess Open A-Open, organizers divide main prizes equally among tied players regardless of tiebreak; when the tie extends beyond 15th place, players placed 16th or lower do not join the prize share. Organizers do not share special prizes, rating prizes, and all prizes in the B- and C-Opens. Organizers award special prizes only when at least five players enter the respective category.

Freestyle championship qualification: the winner of the grenke Freestyle Chess Open A-Open qualifies for the FIDE Freestyle Chess World Championship 2027 (or the highest-placed not-yet-qualified player when the winner already holds a qualification). The three highest-placed female players in the Freestyle A-Open qualify for the FIDE Women’s Freestyle Chess World Championship 2026, and the qualification requires full participation in the Freestyle Open without any tournament transfer.

⏱️ Time Control & Pairings

Both tournaments run a 9-round Swiss System with Swiss Chess computer pairings and a time control of 90 minutes for the game plus 30 seconds per move. The grenke Chess Open counts toward national and international ELO rating, and the A-Open offers a chance to play for IM/GM norms. The grenke Freestyle Chess Open counts toward Freestyle ELO rating, and the organizer draws a new starting position immediately before each round begins.

The grenke Chess Open uses a default time of 30 minutes, and the organizer announces the Round 1 default time at the opening. The Freestyle Open uses zero default time because all players must sit at the board when the organizer reveals the starting position. After the organizer displays the starting position, players must not use electronic devices, notes, sources of information, or any advice until the game ends.
