♟️ About Vancouver Chess School

Vancouver Chess School (VCS) is a chess education center and tournament organizer based in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. Founded by FM Maxim Doroshenko, the school provides structured chess education for children ranging from complete beginners to advanced tournament players. Its main center is located in Jericho Village Shopping Centre, while online programs extend its coaching beyond Vancouver. VCS combines group instruction, private coaching, camps, chess clubs, assessment programs, and frequent competitive tournaments. The school uses a structured 12-level chess curriculum that allows students to progress systematically through tactical, strategic, positional, and competitive skills. Vancouver Chess School reports that it has taught more than 5,000 students and currently works with a coaching team of more than 30 instructors. Competition forms an important part of this training model. Therefore, students can move directly from lessons into weekly and monthly tournaments, provincial qualifiers, camps, rapid and blitz events, and larger weekend festivals open to both juniors and adults. Maxim Doroshenko remains the Director and principal organizer of Vancouver Chess School and is the main operational contact for its events. VCS continues an intensive program in 2026. Its Summer Camp #9 is taking place from August 31–September 4, 2026, while the next major open competition is Vancouver Chess Festival #15 on September 19–20, 2026 at the UBC Ponderosa Ballroom. A further edition, Vancouver Chess Festival #16, is already scheduled for November 14–15, 2026.

🎓 Chess Education and Player Development

Chess education is the core of Vancouver Chess School. Students can join in-person group classes, private lessons, online instruction, camps, and tournament-training programs according to their age and playing strength. The school’s 12-level curriculum creates a clear pathway from introductory chess to advanced tournament preparation. Students complete training modules and assessments before progressing to higher levels. In addition, VCS uses its own digital learning tools to support exercises, testing, and practice outside regular lessons. Holiday camps provide more intensive training. VCS runs programs during winter and spring breaks as well as multiple summer camps during July and August. Camp activities combine lessons with rapid, blitz, bughouse, blindfold chess, game analysis, and other practical exercises. The school highlights several strong student achievements, including national and provincial champions and players who have progressed to FIDE titles. Karson Lu, for example, won the U7 FIDE Rapid World School Championship in 2024.

🏆 Tournament Program

Vancouver Chess School has developed a large tournament program alongside its coaching activities. Events range from small practice competitions to major weekend tournaments. Regular formats include Friday Quads, Sunday Chess Club events, rapid tournaments, blitz competitions, Chess Challenge qualifiers, school events, and larger classical tournaments. Different rating systems are used depending on the competition, including Chess Federation of Canada (CFC) and Chess’n Math Association (CMA) ratings. VCS began organizing a structured public tournament series in 2014 to provide players of different strengths with more opportunities to gain competitive experience. The organization continues this model today, with events open not only to its own students but also to the wider chess community. The school has also played an important role in junior chess in British Columbia by organizing regional qualifiers and the B.C. Provincial Chess Challenge, which helps select players for Team BC and the Canadian Chess Challenge.

🌟 Vancouver Chess Festival

The Vancouver Chess Festival has become one of VCS’s principal public tournament series. It welcomes both adult and junior players and combines classical tournament chess with shorter-format side events. Vancouver Chess Festival #14 took place on April 18–19, 2026. The series continues with Vancouver Chess Festival #15 on September 19–20, 2026 at UBC Ponderosa Ballroom, 6445 University Boulevard, Vancouver. Festival #15 features five classical Swiss-system rounds with sections for Open, U2100, U1700, U1300, and U900 players. The classical competition is CFC-rated, uses a G/60 time control, and offers a guaranteed CAD 5,500 prize fund. A seven-round blitz tournament is also scheduled for Saturday evening. Maxim Doroshenko is the organizer, while Stephen Wright serves as Tournament Director. The same team is scheduled to run Vancouver Chess Festival #16 on November 14–15, 2026, again at UBC Ponderosa Ballroom.

🌱 Junior and Provincial Chess

Vancouver Chess School maintains a particularly strong focus on junior competitive development. Its tournament system gives young players frequent opportunities to establish ratings, practice tournament procedures, and progress toward larger provincial and national events. The B.C. Chess Challenge is an important part of this pathway. Vancouver Chess School organizes regional qualifying events and the provincial championship, while the strongest players can earn places representing British Columbia at the Canadian Chess Challenge. VCS also uses tournaments as an educational tool rather than treating competition separately from training. Coaches can identify weaknesses from tournament games and integrate them into future lessons. Consequently, students receive a continuous cycle of instruction, competition, analysis, and progression.

🏛️ Organization and Facilities

The school’s main Vancouver center is located at Jericho Village Shopping Centre on Alma Street. The facility hosts classes, camps, private lessons, practice tournaments, and chess-club activities throughout the year. Maxim Doroshenko leads Vancouver Chess School as Director and tournament organizer. His involvement includes educational program development, tournament planning, player communication, and broader junior-chess initiatives in British Columbia. For larger tournaments, VCS also uses external venues such as the UBC Ponderosa Ballroom and community recreation facilities. This allows the organization to accommodate substantially larger fields while maintaining its regular teaching center for weekly activities.
