♟️ About Eastern Chess Association

Eastern Chess Association (ECA) is a Virginia-based chess tournament organization focused on competitive over-the-board chess in the United States. Its events are concentrated primarily in the Richmond–Glen Allen area and Northern Virginia, where ECA organizes multi-day classical tournaments, blitz side events, rating-restricted competitions, and scholastic sections. Rather than operating as a conventional membership chess club, the association specializes in tournament production and provides events rated by US Chess and, in selected sections, FIDE. ECA’s principal recurring tournaments are the Skyline Open, Central Virginia Open, and Piedmont Open. These events use multiple sections to serve experienced tournament players, developing competitors, and juniors within the same weekend. Open sections frequently receive FIDE rating, while lower sections use US Chess ratings and rating limits to create balanced fields. Moreover, many ECA tournaments form part of the Virginia Chess Federation Cup and include separate evening blitz competitions. Robert “Robbie” Jackson is the principal organizer, National Tournament Director, FIDE Arbiter, and Chief Tournament Director for Eastern Chess Association. He also currently serves as President of the Virginia Chess Federation, connecting ECA’s tournament activity with organized chess across the Commonwealth. After completing the 3rd Central Virginia Open in April 2026, ECA is preparing two major autumn events: the 5th Skyline Open from October 9–12, 2026 and the 3rd Piedmont Open from November 6–8, 2026.

🏆 Central Virginia Open

The Central Virginia Open has become one of Eastern Chess Association’s principal recurring tournaments in the Richmond area. The inaugural edition took place in Glen Allen in April 2024, with ECA specifically aiming to provide more substantial tournament opportunities in central Virginia. The first tournament included Open, U1700, and U1100 sections, together with a Saturday-night blitz event. The Open received FIDE rating, while all sections were US Chess-rated. GM Sergey Erenburg and Aneesh Desai shared first place in the inaugural Open with 4.5/5. The series continued in 2025 and reached its third edition from April 10–12, 2026 at Hilton Garden Inn Richmond Innsbrook. The 2026 event offered $4,600 in guaranteed prizes and included Open, U1700, U1100, and scholastic U800 competitions. The Open used G/90 +30 and received both FIDE and US Chess rating. Meanwhile, shorter sections provided accessible competition for developing and scholastic players.

🌟 Skyline Open

The Skyline Open is currently Eastern Chess Association’s largest tournament series. The 5th Skyline Open is scheduled for October 9–12, 2026 at the Washington Dulles Airport Marriott in Dulles, Virginia. The tournament advertises $10,000 in prizes and carries 80 US Chess Grand Prix points. Its principal sections are Open, U2000, U1600, and U1200, with both four-day and three-day schedules available for most of the main sections. The Open and U2000 sections are FIDE-rated, while all sections receive US Chess rating. The full schedule consists of seven Swiss-system rounds, with the main classical games played at 90 minutes plus a 30-second increment per move. The tournament also includes a separate FIDE/US Chess blitz event on October 10. ECA provides boards and pieces, while participants are asked to bring their own chess clocks.

♜ Piedmont Open

Another important recurring competition is the Piedmont Open, also based in the Richmond–Glen Allen area. The 3rd Piedmont Open is scheduled for November 6–8, 2026 at Hilton Garden Inn Richmond Innsbrook. The tournament offers a $4,600 guaranteed prize fund and includes Open, U1700, U1100, and scholastic U800 sections. The Open consists of five rounds at G/100 +30 and is submitted for both FIDE and US Chess rating. The U1700 section follows the same classical schedule under US Chess rules, while the U1100 competition uses G/60 +10. A separate blitz tournament is scheduled for Saturday evening. In addition, the Piedmont Open functions as a Virginia Chess Federation Cup event, strengthening its connection with statewide competitive chess.

🎓 Scholastic and Rating-Limited Chess

Eastern Chess Association deliberately includes competition for players below the Open level. Its tournaments frequently offer U2000, U1700, U1600, U1200, U1100, and scholastic sections, depending on the event. Dedicated scholastic competitions typically use shorter time controls and award trophies and medals, while the main adult and open sections offer cash prizes. ECA has also organized standalone Action/Scholastic tournaments, combining faster US Chess-rated play with separate competitions for children. This structure gives young and developing players opportunities to become familiar with organized tournament chess before progressing into longer classical sections. Meanwhile, stronger players can access FIDE-rated competition through the same organizer.

🏛️ Tournament Direction

Robbie Jackson directs ECA’s major events and handles tournament questions, registrations, withdrawals, rating requirements, and practical player communication. Current tournament listings identify him as a National Tournament Director and FIDE Arbiter. Jackson was elected President of the Virginia Chess Federation in August 2025 and continues in that leadership role during 2026. His work therefore spans both independent tournament organization through ECA and broader chess administration in Virginia. Eastern Chess Association uses established tournament platforms such as King Registration for entries and publishes detailed information covering schedules, rating eligibility, byes, prizes, FIDE requirements, and tournament policies before each event.
