♟️ About Federação Paraibana de Xadrez

Federação Paraibana de Xadrez (FPBX) is the official state-level chess federation serving Paraíba, Brazil. Based in João Pessoa, the organization coordinates competitive chess, tournaments, player development, school chess, and regional initiatives throughout the state. The federation has been formally registered since February 4, 1976 and operates as a private non-profit association. FPBX works within the Brazilian chess system and cooperates with the Confederação Brasileira de Xadrez (CBX) on nationally and internationally rated competitions. Moreover, it works with local chess clubs, schools, universities, municipal authorities, tournament organizers, arbiters, and regional chess leaders to expand access to organized chess throughout Paraíba. Marcello de Albuquerque Urquiza currently serves as President and was reconfirmed for the 2026–2029 term. The current leadership team also includes Vice-President Luís Flávio Medeiros Paiva, Secretary Ubirajara Barbosa Barros, Treasurer Genildo de Souza Gomes, and Technical Director Emanuela Régia de Sousa Coelho. Together, the federation leadership manages competition, arbitration, school chess, regional development, communication, and administrative activities.

🏆 State and National Tournament Organization

Federação Paraibana de Xadrez organizes and supports a broad calendar of classical, rapid, blitz, school, university, regional, and national-level competitions. One of its most established events is the Memorial Bobby Fischer, which has developed into an Aberto do Brasil tournament and regularly attracts strong players from Paraíba and other Brazilian states. The Aberto do Brasil XV Memorial Bobby Fischer 2026 took place from March 20–22 in João Pessoa. The six-round classical competition received national and international rating and offered a R$12,000 prize fund. FPBX also organizes major Northeast regional competitions. In August 2026, João Pessoa hosted the Nordestão 2026 – Memorial Machado de Assis, bringing together players from across northeastern Brazil for a FIDE- and CBX-rated classical championship. These events complement state championships and smaller regional competitions, creating opportunities for Paraíba players to compete at increasingly strong levels without leaving the state.

⚡ Circuito Paraibano de Xadrez Rápido

The Circuito Paraibano de Xadrez Rápido is one of FPBX’s main statewide development projects. The circuit combines the work of the federation with local chess leaders in different municipalities. Rather than concentrating every tournament in João Pessoa, stages move through different regions of Paraíba. The 2026 circuit consists of between six and ten stages. The federation increased the circuit prize fund to R$5,000 during the season. Events take place in communities including João Pessoa, Solânea, Campina Grande and other cities across the state. Therefore, players outside the capital can gain regular competitive experience and develop FPBX, CBX and, where applicable, FIDE ratings. The circuit also strengthens cooperation between the federation and local organizers. This decentralized structure plays an important role in FPBX’s objective of expanding organized chess throughout Paraíba.

🎓 School and University Chess

School chess is one of the federation’s current strategic priorities. FPBX organizes the Campeonato Paraibano de Xadrez Escolar e Universitário, which brings together students from public and private schools as well as colleges and universities. The 2026 championship took place on March 14 in João Pessoa and attracted more than 100 players. Competition categories included U9, U12, U15, U18, and university players, with separate recognition for male and female competitors. The event connects educational chess with official tournament competition. Older school and university categories can also generate CBX and FIDE rating activity under the published tournament conditions. In addition, FPBX works directly with educational institutions. In February 2026, the João Pessoa Municipal Department of Education established a partnership with the federation to strengthen the city’s Xadrez na Escola program. Through these initiatives, the federation aims to create a pathway from introductory school chess to local tournaments, state championships, and nationally rated competition.

🌍 Chess Development Across Paraíba

FPBX works beyond João Pessoa to strengthen chess throughout the entire state. The federation appoints regional directors for important chess areas. The 2026–2029 structure includes dedicated representatives for Borborema, Brejo, and Sertão, allowing the federation to maintain closer contact with chess communities outside the capital. Regional tournaments and partnerships have brought rated chess to cities such as Solânea, Campina Grande, Patos, Pocinhos, Alagoa Grande, Caxambu, and other municipalities. The federation also supports locally organized tournaments by providing rating infrastructure, technical guidance, chess equipment, regulations, and arbitral cooperation. Consequently, FPBX acts not only as a direct tournament organizer but also as an umbrella organization connecting independent chess initiatives throughout Paraíba.

🧑‍⚖️ Arbitration and Tournament Standards

Tournament administration and arbitration form another important part of the federation’s work. The current leadership structure includes Ivanilson Pereira Silva as Director of Arbiters and Emanuela Régia de Sousa Coelho as Technical Director. FPBX competitions follow regulations based on the FIDE Laws of Chess and CBX requirements. Rated events use recognized pairing software and publish tournament information through Chess-Results. The federation also maintains its own FPBX rating activity for suitable regional events. This allows newer and developing players to build a competitive record before or alongside participation in nationally and internationally rated tournaments. Moreover, FPBX provides chess sets for many competitions and coordinates arbiters, technical congresses, appeals procedures, player registrations, and tournament reporting.

📜 History and Institutional Development

Federação Paraibana de Xadrez has been formally registered since February 4, 1976. During the following decades, the organization developed the state championship structure and represented Paraíba within Brazilian chess. Its activities have included individual championships, team events, school competitions, open tournaments, rapid and blitz events, and nationally rated competitions. The federation is formally affiliated with the Confederação Brasileira de Xadrez, connecting Paraíba players and organizers with the national federation structure. A new leadership term began in 2026, when Marcello de Albuquerque Urquiza was reconfirmed as President for the 2026–2029 cycle. The expanded board now includes dedicated directors for technical matters, arbitration, school and educational chess, medical matters, regional development, marketing, communications, and legal support. Almost five decades after its formal registration, FPBX therefore continues to combine traditional state championship responsibilities with modern tournament organization, school chess, regional development, national opens, FIDE-rated competition, and digital tournament administration.
