♟️ About the Organizer
Catalan Chess Federation, officially known as Federació Catalana d’Escacs (FCE), is the governing body for organized chess in Catalonia, Spain. The federation was founded on August 2, 1925. It operates as a private, nonprofit sports organization with public and civic functions.
FCE brings together chess clubs, school sports associations, chess sections, players, arbiters, coaches, and other organizations across Catalonia. It regulates official competition and supports chess development throughout the territory. The federation works through territorial structures covering Barcelona, Central Catalonia, Girona, Lleida, and Tarragona. Ramon Chalmeta i Ugas has served as federation president since May 2025.
🏆 Tournaments and Chess Events
The federation manages an extensive program of classical, rapid, blitz, team, school, youth, women’s, veteran, and online competitions. Its principal events include the Catalan Chess League, Catalan individual championships, the Copa Catalana, age-group championships, school team competitions, and territorial championships.
In addition, FCE coordinates the Catalan International Chess Open Circuit. This circuit brings together international tournaments held across Catalonia. The federation also publishes an official competition calendar, tournament regulations, pairings, results, rating information, and technical circulars.
Furthermore, FCE supports clubs that organize local and international competitions. It provides regulatory guidance, arbiter appointments, rating administration, competition oversight, and event-promotion services. Its 2026 program includes events for beginners, club players, junior competitors, elite players, and titled professionals.
🌱 Chess Development and Governance
Chess education forms an important part of the federation’s work. FCE runs youth-development and technical-training programs for several age categories. It also supports school chess, coaching education, arbiter development, women’s chess, social chess projects, and tournament broadcasting.
The federation works with the Government of Catalonia, municipalities, educational institutions, clubs, and other sports organizations. These partnerships help introduce chess to new players and strengthen existing club structures. Moreover, FCE provides governance through its executive board, committees, territorial delegates, competition regulations, and disciplinary bodies.
The federation celebrated its centenary in 2025. Today, it continues to connect Catalunya’s long-established club tradition with modern competition, digital broadcasting, online chess, education, and international tournament activity.
