Šahovski klub Bošnjaci (Chess Club Bošnjaci) is a competitive chess club and international tournament organizer based in Bošnjaci, Vukovar-Srijem County, Croatia. Established in 1997, the club represents its municipality in the Croatian chess league system and has built a particularly strong reputation through the annual Open Bošnjaci, a FIDE-rated international tournament traditionally held at the beginning of January. Its activities combine club competition, major open-tournament organization, and participation in national team events. The club competes within the structure of the Croatian Chess Federation (Hrvatski šahovski savez) and the eastern Croatian regional chess system. Its senior team is part of the Second Croatian Chess League – East, where it competes against clubs from Slavonia and eastern Croatia. ŠK Bošnjaci also maintains a successful women’s team. In July 2026, the club achieved one of its most important recent results by winning the Croatian Women’s Cup, finishing ahead of ŠK Amater Strizivojna and ŠK Polet Buševec. Šahovski klub Bošnjaci has developed from a local eastern Croatian chess club into an organization with a recognizable national and international tournament profile. The club has maintained continuous competitive activity through Croatian team leagues while building the Open Bošnjaci into an annual fixture. The tournament’s longevity closely follows the club’s own development: the competition reached its 30th edition in 2026. Bošnjaci’s location near Županja also gives the club a natural regional role. Its tournaments regularly attract competitors from throughout Croatia as well as neighboring and other European federations.

♜ Croatian League Chess

The club’s senior team competes in the Second Croatian Chess League – East during the 2026 season. This division includes established clubs from Osijek, Vinkovci, Našice, Slatina, Pleternica, Trpinja, Slavonski Brod, Županja, and other communities across eastern Croatia. Official league documentation identifies Luka Golubičić as the ŠK Bošnjaci team representative. The club’s participation in the regional league structure provides regular classical team competition alongside its international tournament program.

👩 Women’s Chess

The club recorded a major national achievement in 2026 when ŠK Bošnjaci won the Croatian Women’s Cup. The competition concluded at the Hotel Westin in Zagreb on July 5, 2026. ŠK Bošnjaci finished first, ahead of ŠK Amater Strizivojna in second place and ŠK Polet Buševec in third. The medals were presented during the closing ceremony attended by European Chess Union President Zurab Azmaiparashvili and Croatian Chess Federation President Branimir Jukić. This national title represents an important competitive success for a club from a relatively small municipality and strengthens ŠK Bošnjaci’s position within Croatian team chess.

🌟 Open Bošnjaci

The Open Bošnjaci is the club’s flagship tournament and one of the most established annual international Opens in eastern Croatia. The 30th Open Bošnjaci took place from January 3–9, 2026 in the Cinema Hall of the Cultural Center in Bošnjaci. The tournament attracted 141 players from 11 federations, including six Grandmasters, four International Masters, and numerous other titled competitors. Players contested nine Swiss-system rounds at 90 minutes plus a 30-second increment from move one. The tournament was rated by both FIDE and the Croatian Chess Federation and offered approximately €7,100 in prizes. IM Sanjin Culum of Bosnia and Herzegovina won the 2026 edition with 7/9, taking first place on tiebreak. GM Ante Šarić and GM Blažimir Kovačević also finished on seven points. Đuka Golubičić served as Tournament Director, while IA Branko Vidačković was Chief Arbiter.

🏆 31st Open Bošnjaci 2027

Šahovski klub Bošnjaci has already confirmed the continuation of its flagship tournament. The 31st Open Bošnjaci is scheduled for January 3–9, 2027, again at the Cinema Hall of the Cultural Center in Bošnjaci. The event continues the club’s long-standing model of a FIDE-rated international classical Open at the start of the calendar year. Early registrations already include titled players from Croatia and neighboring federations. The tournament’s continuity, combined with the club’s Croatian league participation and the 2026 Women’s Cup victory, makes ŠK Bošnjaci one of the most active chess organizations in Vukovar-Srijem County.
